Here is what the retinol conversation leaves out.

Retinol thins your outer skin layer to trigger collagen production deeper down. That mechanism works. But thinning that layer removes your UV protection. In perimenopause, with estrogen already priming your skin to overproduce melanin, that UV exposure makes melasma and hyperpigmentation worse. The ingredient you are using to fix your dark spots can be the reason they are getting darker.
