Kenny Y.S Son Design + Art + Craft

Recently, I had the pleasure of working on a very fun piece.

A gift for the client’s partner, who is an architect.

A framed simplified ibsa drawing of his favourite building, The Suzuki House, designed by the Australian architecture duo Bolles + Wilson.

Thank you for the opportunity Grace. X

A Cha Ze (茶则) is my third and final inclusion for Brewed, the exhibition. It is a tea scoop/tray or a measuring tool used to handle and transfer dry tea leaves. You would measure out and sort the loose leaves before placing them into a teapot or gaiwan.

Nickel silver with a tinned top surface.

Also included in the Brewed exhibition is my chá dāo (茶刀) or a Tea knife, used to pry apart tightly compressed tea leaves.

Instead of cutting or slicing the leaves, the sharp or pointed metal blade is wiggled into the compressed leaves to gently break off chunks for brewing.

This Brass Cha Pan (茶盘), or tea tray is one of my inclusions for the upcoming Brewed exhibition at O(L)D

A cha pan is a vital tool in the Chinese tea ceremony-ritual, where the tea ware are placed on top as the drainage tray collects the spilled or rinsed water.

Different to the common cha pan, the water falls into a hidden compartment through the gutter, which then pours out of the drainage opening, filling the open tray.

My intention was for the entire process to complement the way of the tea.

The show opens this Sunday.

The third and final show I took part for MDW’26 was ‘You’ve got mail.’

You’ve Got Mail’ aims to shine a spotlight on an everyday object we rarely stop to notice, the letterbox!
Familiar to all and quietly overlooked, it carries a subtle story of change.

This exhibition celebrates designers who dare to rethink the ordinary, transforming humble objects so they can evolve alongside the world around them.

The below was my contribution:

‘Decagonal Cluster Pillar (concept)’

Material: Nickel Silver, ready-made aluminium bearings

(Larger scale singular sector demonstrates the imagined opening sequence).

Each platform of the tower reciprocates the building level, whilst on rotation, each face represents its own individual unit.

This sculpture is a multiplex-cluster letterbox concept that aims to explore and elaborate on the modern way of living and its corresponding letterboxes.
This concept aims to allow viewers to imagine and ponder on how we deliver-receive, hold and collect mail.

Opening tonight (invitation only), ‘Being Sensitive’ is my 2nd involvement in this year’s Melbourne Design Week ‘26.

Curated by .kennon - in partnership with RUSSH , exhibition echoes the studios ethos; to be sensitive to place, people, and material.

The exhibition will be held in .kennon , on the top floor of Harry Seidler’s only built work in Melbourne’s CBD.

This, I am very excited about.

Appropriately, inspired by the Seidler tower, the works presented through ‘Being Sensitive’ are a series of wall-hanging pieces, drawn with metal.
The aluminium drawings speak of their form in a simplified language, whilst the ibsa drawings are a closer and more detailed interpretation of the Seidler tower.

*ibsa is a traditional Korean metal-craft technique that involves using a chisel and a chasing hammer to create narrowly spaced indentations across the entire surface of the object in horizontal and diagonal directions. As a result, the surface becomes somewhat similar to woven or intertwined fabric. Onto this surface, gold or silver thread (0.18-0.2mm thickness) is inlaid into the indentations created with the chisel.
