A pre-work sports massage isnāt about relaxation, itās about waking up the nervous system and preparing the body for the work ahead.
Using faster paced techniques immediately before a training session or competition can help encourage circulation, wake up the muscles, improve body awareness, and prepare the horse for exercise.

From muddy boots to clinic shoes.
One morning can take me from a horse paddock to a treatment room.
Different clients.
Different environments.
Same goal.
Helping bodies move better.
Most people would watch the first video and see a horse acting up.
I see a horse telling us something.
When I arrived, this horse was carrying a lot of tension through his body. His neck was high, his movement was braced, and he was struggling to truly relax. The owner had also been experiencing some performance concerns, including difficulties with a canter lead and a reluctance to move freely through the trot.
Adding to that, he hadnāt been out of the paddock for a few weeks, so there were multiple factors contributing to what we were seeing.
This is exactly why I take before and after videos.
Without them, itās easy to label behaviour as a horse being naughty, fresh, difficult, or needing more work.
But when you slow down and really look, you often see something different.
You see a horse holding tension.
You see a horse struggling to move comfortably through its body.
You see a nervous system sitting on high alert.
After a 2 hour Myotherapy treatment, the change was hard to miss.
His stride lengthened.
He stepped further underneath himself.
His neck softened and lowered.
His whole body began to move with more freedom and ease.
The owner asked me during the session, āWill I see results?ā
My answer was simple:
āYes, you will. In some form, there will be immediate results.ā
Not because massage is magic.
But because when you reduce tension, improve movement, and give the nervous system an opportunity to settle, the body often responds immediately.
The goal isnāt to create a quieter horse.
The goal is to create a horse that no longer feels the need to shout.
The most beautiful thing about horses isnāt what they can do.
Itās who they allow us to become alongside them.

What if the way your horse stands isnāt actually normal?
Maybe itās just normal for them.
Most people look at these photos and see a horse standing differently. I see a horse choosing to use its body differently.
Nobody moved the feet. Nobody repositioned the body. The horse simply chose a different posture after treatment.
The fascinating thing about compensation is that it rarely happens overnight. It develops gradually through small changes in posture, movement, and muscle use until eventually those patterns become the horseās normal.
A horse can carry tension for so long that the compensation no longer stands out. It simply becomes the way they move, the way they stand, and the way they carry themselves.
Sometimes the first sign of change isnāt a perfect posture. Itās the horse discovering there may be another option.
This was only the first session, and the goal isnāt to create the perfect before and after photo. The goal is to build a horse that no longer needs the compensation in the first place, one that can move more freely, develop strength more effectively, and carry itself with greater ease over time.
Because the way a horse stands is rarely the problem. Itās often the clue.
This horseās story is only just beginningš“āØ
Everyone sees the finish line.
Few see the version of you that had to be built to get there.
The kilometres.
The discipline.
The recovery.
The preparation.
The secret weapon? Pre-workout massage š„
Because 21km is earned long before race day.

When a horse reacts, there are so many layers to it.
Sometimes I need to step away, slow down, and work with the horse where theyāre at.
Sometimes the reaction is guarding, uncertainty, discomfort, or simply a horse that doesnāt yet feel safe to let go.
But deep down, a lot of these horses do want help.
They want to release, soften, and be understood. I just have to find the right way to communicate with them and support them through it.
If your horse is presenting with behavioural signs and you feel like there may be more going on underneath the surface, maybe this is something we can work through togetherš¤
