Apply a typical moisturiser to your skin and most of the hydration evaporates within the hour. This is transepidermal water loss, the movement of water up through the skin and out into the air, and it happens constantly.

Keeping water in takes two things:
1. Humectants, like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, pull water into the upper layers of skin.
2. Lipids, like ceramides, sit between skin cells and slow the rate that water escapes.

Humectants without lipids means you draw water in and then lose it. Lipids without humectants means you have less water to hold in the first place.
