Children learn best when what they experience is meaningful, practical and closely connected to their immediate environment and daily lives. In ECCD, learning should therefore focus on relevant, hands-on experiences delivered through play-based approaches. The 13 traditional arts and crafts, Zorig Chusum, provide a valuable opportunity for young children to develop early awareness and appreciation of the rich cultural heritage while nurturing creativity and artistic expression.
The principles and elements of Zorig Chusum can be meaningfully integrated into ECCD through simple, play-based and age-appropriate activities. The intention is not to teach children technical mastery of the arts, but to promote creativity, cultural identity, fine and gross motor development, social interaction, imagination and appreciation for nature and Bhutanese traditions. Such experiences also encourage children to explore, experiment, create and express themselves freely.
Activities can make use of locally available natural and recycled materials such as clay, stones, leaves, bamboo, flowers, wool, seeds, sticks, fabric scraps and old paper, making learning both sustainable and rooted in children’s everyday surroundings.
