“What does that mean?”

If you’re not familiar with Demeter, this is a BIG deal.

Demeter is the international standard for biodynamic agriculture, with requirements that go beyond traditional organic farming. It looks beyond simply what isn’t used on a crop and considers the health of the entire agricultural ecosystem—soil health, biodiversity, natural cycles, regeneration of the land and the long-term vitality of the farm itself.

The standards are incredibly comprehensive. Demeter farms must meet organic requirements while also following additional biodynamic standards, including strict limitations on agricultural inputs, practices designed to build and protect soil fertility, and requirements around biodiversity. In fact, at least 10% of the farm area must be dedicated to biodiversity or managed under an approved biodiversity plan.

Certification requires farms to go through a conversion process and an on-site inspection against the Demeter Biodynamic Standard, with continued annual inspections once certified.
