“Why does my hair feel so different than it did 10 years ago?”
I hear some version of this in my chair all the time.
“My hair used to be so thick.”�“It suddenly feels dry.”�“My texture has completely changed.”�“It doesn’t behave the way it used to.”
And no, you’re not imagining it.

Our hair can absolutely change as we move through different stages of life. You may notice changes in density, texture, growth, moisture, curl pattern, strength and even how your hair responds to colour and styling.
So why does it happen?

There isn’t one answer.
Hormonal changes can affect the hair and scalp. Genetics play a role. Stress, certain medications and some health conditions can affect hair growth or shedding. Nutrition matters too.
Protein, iron, zinc and vitamins such as B12 and vitamin D all play roles in normal hair growth and health. But this doesn’t mean everyone needs to start taking a handful of “hair vitamins.” If you notice significant thinning, excessive shedding or a sudden unexplained change in your hair, that’s something worth discussing with your doctor. They can determine whether something such as an iron or vitamin deficiency, thyroid issue or another underlying factor should be investigated.

Then there’s what we do to our hair.
Years of colouring, lightening, heat styling, sun exposure and simply having longer or more chemically treated hair can change how it feels and behaves.
Grey hair can also have a different texture than your pigmented hair, which is why you may suddenly notice wiry, coarse or more resistant areas even though the rest of your hair hasn’t changed in quite the same way.
The biggest thing I want women to know is this:
You don’t necessarily need to fight your changing hair. You may simply need to change how you’re treating it.

The shampoo you loved for 10 years may not be what your hair needs today. Your haircut may need a different shape. Your colour placement may need to change. You might need more moisture, less heat, different styling products or an entirely new approach to working with your natural texture.
And this is one of my favourite parts of what I do.
I don’t want to give you the hair that worked for you 10 years ago. I want to understand your hair today, your lifestyle and how you want to feel, and create something that works for the woman you are now. 🤍
