Yes, clip-ins can cause damage, but only if you apply them improperly. Here’s what you need to know to prevent that from happening ⬇️

(1) If you have fine hair, do not opt for classic/lace weft clip-ins as those are much heavier and will therefore add more tension to your hair. Instead, go for seamless clip-ins (these look like tape-ins but without the adhesive). They are very flat and lightweight.

(2) Clip-in extensions are designed to be temporary and should not be worn longer than a few weeks back-to-back (if clipped directly on your hair) or 1 week (if applied to a braid down). If you’re applying them on a braid down with a protective net sewn around the perimeter, you can keep them for up to 4 weeks as long as you clip the extensions on the net and not your hair.

(3) If they ever hurt while sleeping or feel uncomfortable with the braid down method, that’s primarily for two reasons: 1) the braid down is too tight, or 2) too much hair is grabbed under each clip, causing more tension. The best way to avoid this is to braid loose, keep the hair installed for less than a week, and add very minimal hair under each clip.

(4) It’s important to be gentle during both the application and removal processes to avoid pulling or tugging on your natural hair. Rough handling can lead to hair breakage! If they are clipped too tightly to your natural hair, it can cause stress on your hair and scalp, potentially leading to damage over time! Do nor sleep with them if you are not applying them on cornrows (i.e., if all of your hair is left out), and do nor forcefully snap them open or closed!
