A 13-minute ferry from downtown and there are no cars. None. Just bikes, beaches, and the whole skyline sitting across the water like someone put it there for you.
Centre Island is the one everyone knows — but walk 20 minutes east to Ward’s and the crowds disappear completely.
We forget this is here. Every single summer we forget, and then it’s September.

⏰ Ferries run every 15–30 min through summer, last one back ~11:30pm weekends
💡 Buy online. There’s a separate express line — the box office queue hits 60–90 min on hot weekends
🚲 Bring a bike or rent one there. The island is 5km end to end
🌅 Stay for sunset. The skyline lights up and the last ferry back is the best view of the trip

It looks like an Escher drawing you can actually walk through. 🌀
154 staircases. 80 platforms. 2,500 steps. And no floors, no rooms, no purpose except climbing it.
You go up expecting a view of Manhattan. What you get is a view of the building itself — every angle you turn, the stairs fold into a different shape. Half the people up there are photographing the structure, not the skyline.
It closed in 2021 and reopened this March with new safety barriers throughout.

There’s a building in New York that’s nothing but staircases. 🇺🇸
The Vessel at Hudson Yards is 154 interwoven staircases and 80 platforms stacked into a honeycomb — about 2,500 steps in total. It isn’t an office, a museum or a monument. The whole structure exists to be climbed.
Every landing gives you a different frame of Manhattan. You climb the same building twice and see two different cities.

🚇 7 train to Hudson Yards — right at the door
💡 Book the flex ticket. The timed ones lock you in and this area is worth wandering
