Your wedding DJ can make the ceremony feel completely seamless... or leave everyone wondering what’s supposed to happen next.
And let's face it: the wedding DJ makes you look good. Or... holding the bag if the cues are off.
Here's a new guide on how I work with the DJ before and during the ceremony, including processional cues, signing music, microphones, and that all-important recessional hit so everything goes as smoothly as possible.
The big rule: don’t make them guess.

Wedding Officiants: Don’t Leave the DJ Cues to Chance Wedding officiants and DJs have to work together for the ceremony to feel seamless. Here’s how I handle music, microphones, processional cues, signing music and the recessional so nobody is guessing on the wedding day.
Wedding officiants: do you offer one ceremony package, or several options at different price points?
My own approach is simple: one full-service package.
The rehearsal is included.
The love story is included.
Multiple script revisions are included.
The couple gets plenty of control over the final ceremony.
That’s been my model for years.
But with affordability becoming a bigger issue for couples, an officiant who wants to capture more weddings might choose a different approach — perhaps a premium full-service option alongside something simpler for smaller or more budget-conscious weddings.
There isn’t only one way to build the business. The question is which clients you want to serve and what you can sustainably offer them.

Wedding officiants: the wedding market isn’t moving in just one direction.
One trend highlighted by The Wedding Report is a widening split in spending.
At the top end, luxury weddings are becoming even more luxurious.
At the other end, more couples are working with tighter budgets and being much more selective about where their wedding dollars go.
If you’re building an officiant business, that’s useful context for thinking about your pricing, your services, and which part of the market you want to serve.

Wedding officiants: I’m a big believer in doing the rehearsal.
In fact, I include it in my package and pricing.
Yes, you’re there to run through the ceremony and make sure everybody knows where to go and what to do.
But you’re also spending an hour with the couple and the people closest to them. You’re shaking hands, laughing together, and getting comfortable with each other.
So when you arrive on the wedding day, you’re not walking into a room full of strangers anymore.
That rapport is priceless.

Wedding officiants: being prepared doesn’t mean trying to predict every possible disaster.
It means giving yourself a dry run before you’re in the moment.
And one of the best ways to do that is with other officiants.
I go live on YouTube every Thursday at noon Eastern so we can work through those questions together.

Wedding officiants: the “vibe check” is that first meeting with a prospective couple where you’re both figuring out whether you’re the right fit to work together.
That meeting is also where you walk them through what the process will look like over the next few weeks or months.
How you’ll plan the ceremony together.
How they’ll review the script.
How you’ll gather their story.
How you’ll involve friends and family.
How you’ll prepare for the rehearsal and wedding day.
You’re not just answering questions. You’re helping them understand what it will feel like when they put the ceremony in your hands–and you make it a collaborative partnership.

The hardest part of officiating a wedding usually isn’t the ceremony itself. It’s knowing what to do when.
When do you meet with the couple? Send the questionnaire? Contact friends and family? Write the ceremony? Finalize the script? Rehearse?
I’ve used the same basic ceremony-creation timeline for years, with built-in trip wires so each step naturally leads to the next and nothing gets dropped.
I finally put the whole process into one place, from the first inquiry through wedding day and follow-up.
👉 Wedding Officiant Timeline: The Full Ceremony Creation Process
Wedding Officiant Timeline: What to Do and When Not sure when to hold the planning meeting, send questionnaires, write the ceremony or finalize the script? Here’s the full wedding officiant timeline I’ve used through hundreds of ceremonies.
Wedding officiants: there are three high-touch moments in the ceremony-creation process where you really build the rapport that shows up at the front of the room on the wedding day.
First is the chem check or vibe check — that initial conversation where you and the couple figure out whether you’re the right officiant for them.
Second is the wedding workshop, meaning the ceremony-planning session where you sit down together, work through their ceremony, and help them feel confident that you know exactly what you’re doing.
Third is the rehearsal, where they watch you take all that preparation and confidently lead their people through what’s going to happen.
Those three moments build the trust and familiarity that can feel like magic when you’re standing together on the wedding day.

Wedding officiants: the hour you spend sitting down with your couple and working through the ceremony is doing more than helping you plan.
You’re hearing their ideas, laughing together, advising them, affirming their choices, and building trust. That relationship starts to form right there — and you bring that connection with you into the ceremony itself.
Our custom-designed ceremony platform, Officiantly, helps guide you through that planning conversation efficiently without cutting out the human connection that makes the time together so valuable.
Don’t trade that relationship-building for convenience.

You don’t need years of history with a couple to make their ceremony feel like you know them incredibly well.
The key is hearing their story from both sides.
That’s where you learn the little things: who completely missed the signs before the proposal, who’s the klutz, what they tease each other about, and the moments their friends and family instantly recognize.
Build those details into the ceremony, and suddenly there’s real chemistry at the front of the room.
And this is exactly what I teach inside Unboring Wedding Academy: how to build that kind of connection into the ceremony creation process, whether you’re a friend or relative officiating for someone you love or a hired professional meeting the couple for the first time.
