Today, I met with a new client who came to me seeking help. She had a strong intuition that something was wrong with her nails, and oh boy, she was correct. Once I started to file her nails down, it was very difficult; it was definitely MMA (Methylmethacrylate—dental grade acrylics used to make bridges and dentures). In its raw form, it is a carcinogen, and the removal and prep took me 1 hour to complete! The proper product that should have been used is called Ethyl methacrylate (EMA). She presented a nail that was at the beginning stages of a greenie, pseudomonas bacteria under her nail where it seperated. It appeared that the tech used strong c-curved, full-well tips that caused severe damage by separation of the nail plate (onycholysis). I also noticed she had been suffering reoccurring burns which we call "rings of fire" due to improper filing techniques by overfilling her nails; they were very brittle. I understand that nail technicians all have to start somewhere; I was once there! But when severe damage occurs to this degree, you should stop immediately and seek more education. This will only help you better yourself and provide a safe environment for your clients, as well as not ruin your reputation.
