💡When it finally clicks that boundaries are often artificial constructs in systems and you start to understand that all world issues are interconnected.

👉🏾 Boundaries are just things that we create to
distinguish between what’s important to us and what’s unimportant OR to make things
simpler and easier to manage

👉🏾 The problem is that sometimes we forget that the boundaries are created by us and that they’re not actually reflected in reality

👉🏾 Which means we’re often surprised when the world doesnt behave in a way that respects these fixed boundaries.

👉🏾 We draw boundaries around problems when we think “this is a climate problem” or “that’s a social inequality problem” or “that’s an overconsumption problem.” But in the real world all these problems bleed into each other and climate problems ARE inequality problems which ARE overconsumtion problems…etc.

👉🏾 We draw boundaries in time when we choose to look at the effects of something over an arbitrarily chosen time horizon when in reality those effects extend far out 50, 100, 1000 years into the future. But we’re not considering those effects
because we’ve set these artificial boundaries in time

👉🏾 We draw boundaries when we think we throw things “away” because we’ve removed them out of some imaginary spatial boundary into some other place where we think they no longer affect us or impact us. When in reality they’re still affecting us from other parts of the system that we’re just not able to see

👉🏾 Boundaries can be a useful tool because we can’t take in the full complexity of the world
every time we want to solve a problem.

👉🏾 But it’s important to remember that boundaries affect what we’re able to see and they affect the solutions that we’re able to consider.

👉🏾 And boundaries are not neutral. Who drew the boundaries. Where are the boundaries drawn? Can they be redrawn in different ways?

👉🏾 Maybe that’ll open up different possible solutions or different perspectives that you hadn’t considered

Folks are literally obsessed 💅🏾 😏😅

…Also a friendly reminder that context matters 🙈

😔 Maybe everyone can use this same speech again in a few years, making the same hollow promises to act in the face of genocide—and repeating the same claim that they “didn’t know” the full extent of the horrors.

😠 It wasn’t true then, and it won’t be true in the future.

😡 Declassified U.S. government documents show that the Clinton administration knew, in the early stages of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, about the systematic mass killings and the deliberate targeting of Tutsis. Yet it avoided publicly using the word “genocide,” in part to avoid the pressure to intervene.

😢 This is a pattern we’ve seen before, and one we are witnessing again.

👉🏾 If you won’t act now, spare us your future speeches

👉🏾 Fear is a powerful marketing tool… one often used to drive consumption.

👉🏾 We’re constantly being sold the idea that something terrible will happen if we don’t buy this or that product, or keep up with the latest trend.

👉🏾 But honestly?

🤷🏾‍♀️ If you don’t buy that latest thing… nothing will happen.

🤷🏾‍♀️ You’ll be fine. Your life will go on.

👉🏾 One of the many ways to loosen consumption’s chokehold on us is to learn to see through the marketing tactics designed to make us feel like we need more.

Recipe:
1 part “Thoughts”
2 parts “Hopes”
Slowly add “Feelings” until desired consistency

😏 JK…

🦄 There’s NO such thing as a chemical free product.

⚛️ A chemical is anything made of matter. So, if it has mass and it takes up space...it’s a chemical.

👉🏾If you can touch it, 👀if you can see it, if 😋you can eat it...it’s a chemical.

😤 Chemical free is just a fear-based marketing term making it tougher for customers to make better buying decisions by spreading misinformation 🤷🏾‍♀️

🤔 Optimizing individual parts of a system can actually harm the whole...

🍃 We aren’t a small business hoping to grow into a large corporation. We’re a small business. BY DESIGN.

🍃 Our production is designed in a way that places natural limits to growth and forces us to take our time and practice

🍃 There’s this accepted idea that success in business means growth.

🍃 And that if you’re not on the track towards fast growth. Bigger production. More products. Faster turn-around. Then you’re somehow failing.

🍃 But, on an intuitive level I think we all also understand that unlimited grow is unsustainable.

🍃 At some point we reach the limits. Of resources. Of everything

🍃 Challenging the assumption that more growth is better is one way we hope to contribute to a more sustainable business culture.

🍃 Growth isn’t always negative, but as a singular focus it can be destructive and distract from all the other ways that businesses can be successful and contribute to a better, more equitable world.

This is degrowth design in practice…
