Facial erythema is quite visible, and as the underlying causes remain hidden for most people, the red face often causes embarrassment, decreased self-esteem and, in some cases, is wrongly associated with alcohol consumption.

While facial erythema may reflect sensitive skin or barrier disruption, it can also indicate a range of underlying dermatological conditions.
