It's that time of year - the leaves are all sorts of shades of red, gold and brown and the smell of pumpkin spice lattes and warm baked apple crisp float through the chilly air as people pull out their winter clothes with excitement.

As soon as the calendar turns to October though, the world around us begins to buzz in anticipation of Halloween - people compare costume ideas, schedule tours of haunted houses, plan appropriate-themed parties and stock up on sweets in anticipation of the trick-or-treaters.

The only person not caught up in such festivities though is Jesus. You know why? Because it's a holiday rooted deep in Satan's territory.

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. -Ephesians 5:11

At this point, you're probably debating exiting out of this internet window and moving on, yet you're curious as to why I would write such a thing.

But, it's a holiday for the children! There's no harm in it - it's only fun and games, you might say.

THE HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN

So, let's go to the beginning. To the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain a couple hundred years ago. Back then, the Celtics celebrated the new year on November 1. The Celtics believed that on the night of October 31, the ghosts of the dead returned to earth, causing trouble and damaging crops, yet making it easier for Celtic priests to make prophesies about the future.

In celebration, the Celts wore costumes (usually animal heads and skins) and gathered around large sacred bonfires to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic gods. The holiday began to change as the Roman Empire grew into Celtic territory and later, as Christianity spread with the coming of Jesus.

In 1000 AD, the church designated November 2 as All Souls' Day (also known as All Saints Day, All-hallows Eve and eventually Halloween), a day to honor the dead. It was also celebrated with people dressing up in costumes of saints, angels and devils and dancing around big bonfires. Most historians believe this holiday was created to replace the Celtic festival - something more church-appropriate though.

Halloween came to America in the nineteenth century as more immigrants brought their cultures with them to the colonies. Because the Protestant belief was very powerful though, people created a more American version of the Celtic, consisting mostly of play parties - public events held to celebrate the harvest, dance, sing, share stories of the dead and tell fortunes.

At the turn of the century there was a big push to make Halloween into a holiday about community, not ghosts, pranks and witchcraft. Leaders and parents were encouraged to take the "grotesque" out of the holiday and make it more child and community-friendly.

How Pagans Celebrate Today

• Sabbats and Rituals: For modern Wiccans, Druids, and neo-pagans, Samhain is the most sacred Sabbat of the year—often called the "Witch's New Year".
• Altars of Remembrance: Practitioners build home altars adorned with autumn leaves, candles, and photographs to honor deceased ancestors.
• Feasting and Reflection: Celebrants gather for ritual meals, silent suppers, outdoor fires, and quiet contemplation of the cyclical nature of life and death.

Core Spiritual Meanings of Samhain

• Honoring Ancestors: It is a time to remember, respect, and communicate with deceased family members and guides. Families often set an extra place at the dinner table or light candles to welcome returning souls.
• The Death and Rebirth Cycle: As nature decays and goes dormant for winter, Samhain spiritually represents the acceptance of death as a natural part of the life cycle, rather than something to fear.
• Divination and Foresight: Because the veil is thin, it was considered an ideal time for scrying, fortune-telling, and seeking guidance or omens about the upcoming year.
• Protection and Ward: While many spirits are benevolent ancestors, wandering or mischievous entities are also believed to cross over. Ancient practices like lighting massive bonfires, wearing animal skins, and leaving food offerings (food for the Aos Sí, or fairies/spirits) served as protection and appeasement.

No, Halloween is not inherently evil; it is a secular and cultural holiday for most people, though views on it vary widely.

All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2) to honor Christian martyrs and the deceased. The evening before, October 31, became known as All Hallows' Eve—which was eventually shortened to Halloween.

Over the centuries, these distinct streams—the ancient Celtic harvest festival of Samhain, the Roman Catholic holy days, and later commercial American traditions—merged into the modern holiday we recognise today.

It’s up to you to do your own research, but when you do please ensure it’s a reliable source. Remember it’s all opinions and theories and the real truth and meaning of life is learning, you don’t have to believe everything you are told, you don’t have to take my word for it either.

The true meaning of Halloween is a blend of ancient Celtic harvest traditions, pagan beliefs about the dead, and Christian observances honoring saints and souls.

Halloween does not have a single "dark" meaning, though its roots are deeply tied to the themes of death, the changing seasons, and the spiritual world.

Many religions will oppose Halloween but that’s to beauty of this country we get to choose our own beliefs and thankfully I’m spiritual not religious. Yes I pray, yes I believe in Magick, yes I believe in many things, but the main thing I believe in is truth and my truth is I believe we all have free willso you believe whatever you want and I will believe in whatever I choose and maybe we can accept our differences and beliefs. Wouldn’t that be lovely, imagine that.!

I truly believe religion is man made to subordinate, oppress, control and project fear. No religion or bible has ever brought peace to this world, religion is an ideology and I see and know things you don’t and I love God too. It’s good to have a faith and strong belief system but I don’t see how forcing those beliefs onto others is right, holy or necessary.

I’m spiritual not religious.

So while you all squabble over whose book is right, which is the right answer or right way or who deserves what, dishing out all of that judgment; I will be in Glastonbury this Halloween 🎃 stepping out of the crossfire of Spiritual warfare and serving my souls true purpose with love and light and LIVING IT just trying to be a better person than I was yesterday. I stay in my own lane and I will do it my way, thanks but no thanks. Glastonbury is the perfect setting for someone who identifies as spiritual rather than religious.

I found peace and clarity my own path, especially in moving away from fear-based mindsets and embracing "love and light." Aligned with my own personal truth.

Looking forward to meeting up with my Reiki Master Teacher this Sunday 😍 I have so much to thank this lady for 🙏 For many years I was purely gas lighted by non-believers of spirituality and questioned myself a lot. The Universe has this way of setting you up sometimes and I was introduced to Lindsey.

Lindsey worked for the Japanese government for many years and came back to the UK to teach in colleges. At the time I was doing a lot of things that a Reiki Master can do, naturally but had nobody around me who had taught me the correct ways.

Lindsey became my teacher and attuned me and taught me so much, realising I needed so much guidance at the time didn’t even charge me a fee. Not only is Lindsey the most amazing and most knowledgeable person I know her work is so inspiring. Fluent in Japanese. Fond of my witchy ways. I found out I’m not that crazy after all or on my own in my thoughts or beliefs.

Hey, some people take drugs or drink alcohol to have to enjoy themselves or to be free to really be themselves or to let their hair down but I get a buzz off life itself: mind body and soul and I am only ever myself ✌️

By showing me the Reiki way I found my calling and the rest is history 👌

So grateful to find myself a Master Teacher now too. F**k em all as my Mother would often say. And I really should have just done as I was told but I never did 😂

It was getting a bit lonely being so different from everyone else. The best thing to do if you have any spiritual gifts like you see energy or feel things that can not be explained but you find yourself always correct and bang on the money is don’t explain yourself or try and prove yourself to anyone but yourself. I found if you have a label too, it doesn’t define you and you don’t have to live up to it. It is a wonderful feeling to move from that lonely place of feeling "crazy" to realised, grounded, and surrounded by your true people.

Remember; Seeing is believing and as much as non believers can not force you to not see things the way they see things is the same way you can’t make them see it your way either, works both ways. I’m not a messenger, I’m a healer. Energy doesn't require a debate to exist, and trying to convince non-believers is just a leak of your own precious vibration. I could sit here and tell you things about Reiki that would make your hair curl, so to speak but that’s not my job and I have nothing to prove but I sure do love my life and I meet some really amazing people a lot. Like minded. Open minded. Interesting individuals to say the least.
