For Black History Month, we’re looking back at Black hair in Britain through the memories of Sandra Gittens, author, lecturer, consultant and hair historian.
For Sandra, that story begins with her mother, Mrs Beryl Gittens, who trained in hairdressing in Guyana before coming to the UK in 1952 to join her husband, Brent. In 1958/59, Beryl completed a refresher course with Roy Lando at his hairdressing school and salon in Holland Park.
Born in the UK, Sandra later trained at The Morris School of Hairdressing in Shaftesbury Avenue, where her sister Brenda had also studied, and at the Christine Shaw School of Beauty in Bond Street. Many of the memories shared here grew from observing her mother, their conversations over the years and, later, working alongside her at Vogue Hair Fashions in Georgetown, Guyana.
Those experiences helped shape Sandra’s own journey as a hairdresser, stylist, educator and, later, hair historian.
The family legacy continued in 1984, when Sandra’s brother and sister-in-law, Aubrey and Ingrid Gittens, opened Touch of Beauty Hair & Beauty Salon on Streatham High Road.
Across generations, salons and classrooms, one thing continues to stand out: knowledge shared.
As Sandra says, “knowledge is power.”
