A perennial meadow around the front entrance of our Sussex Farmhouse project.

Tall prairie perennials are interspersed throughout drifts of deciduous and evergreen grasses to ensure pops of bright colour can be enjoyed from the new patio during the warmer months. A wide variety of herbaceous perennials increase the biodiversity of the meadow, and provide an abundance of nectar plants for pollinators.

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Landscape Architect / Designer to join our team in Hove.
This is an opportunity to work on exceptional residential and public landscape projects, from early concepts through to construction. Our work ranges from private estates and Paragraph 84 homes to National Trust landscapes, RHS Chelsea Flower Show gardens and projects across the UK and internationally.
We’re looking for someone with at least five years’ professional experience who enjoys working collaboratively, building strong client relationships and taking ownership of projects from concept through to completion.
The successful candidate will have excellent Vectorworks Landmark skills, strong planting and construction knowledge and the confidence to work directly with clients, consultants and contractors as part of a collaborative studio.
Our studio is in the centre of Hove, with independent cafés, restaurants and the beach right on the doorstep. Brighton is just minutes away, while the South Downs and Sussex countryside are within easy reach.

One of my favourite corners of the garden at the moment.
It’s a little unruly. Plants have wandered out of the border, self-seeded into the gravel and woven themselves together in ways I never expected. I could tidy it up, but I don’t want to.
Verbena bonariensis, Daucus carota, Stachys byzantina, Allium sphaerocephalon, Erigeron karvinskianus, Delphinium consolida ‘White King’, Salvia x Jamensis ‘Blackberry Ripple’, Sesleria autumnalis, Euphorbia characias, Geranium Rosanne and thyme have all found their own place.
The plants are thriving despite the hot, dry weather - this area hasn’t been watered. Many of the plants seem happier growing where they’ve chosen to be rather than where I originally planted them.
It’s a reminder that, sometimes, the best thing we can do is leave well alone. Plants have an extraordinary way of finding the conditions that suit them best if we give them the chance.
The result is a garden that’s a little wilder, a little messier and full of bees and other pollinators. I think it’s all the better for it.

We’re working alongside Architects Atelier de Linde Ltd. - Architects on a proposed Paragraph 84 home in the South Downs National Park.
Paragraph 84 isn’t an easy route. The bar is deliberately high. New homes in the open countryside are only permitted where the design is truly outstanding and responds sensitively to its setting.
That’s why these projects demand more than striking architecture. They begin with the landscape: understanding the landform, ecology, existing vegetation and long-term character of the site, then allowing those qualities to shape the design.
We’re delighted that the Design Review Panel considered this proposal meets the strict requirements worthy of a Paragraph 84 application! We’re really looking forward to developing it further with the team 🙌

How do you design a garden that’s better able to cope with a changing climate? It starts with understanding the landscape itself. In our latest Journal article, we explore how that thinking influences every project, from private gardens to public landscapes. ➡️

Every site has its own soils, drainage, topography, microclimate and ecology. Before we think about planting, we spend time understanding those conditions. The design grows from there. ➡️

Rather than trying to force a landscape into an idea, we ask a simple question: what does this place already want to do? The answer informs everything that follows, from the layout to the planting. ➡️

That might mean dry gravel planting in one project, woodland planting in another, or coastal species elsewhere. The aim isn’t to create a particular style of garden. It’s to create one that belongs where it is. ➡️

Whether we’re working on a residential garden, the National Trust’s Garden for the Future at Sheffield Park, or Commonwealth War Graves Commission projects in Tunisia, we begin in the same way: by understanding the place before making design decisions. ➡️

A rare project where the garden has come before the house.
We’ve been working alongside Architects on this Sussex project, with the landscape being delivered in carefully planned phases. While the house is still under construction, much of the wider garden is already taking shape.
The pool and bespoke sauna sit away from the house, allowing this part of the landscape to be completed before the building house.
McNaughton’s have done a fantastic job bringing these elements to life, and continue to maintain the garden as it establishes. Once the house is complete, they’ll return to deliver the remaining landscape around it.
It’s an unusual way to approach a project, but it means the clients won’t be moving into a new home surrounded by newly planted borders. Instead, they’ll arrive to a garden that’s already settled, thriving and full of life.
The planting, completed last summer, is already looking incredible, and we can’t wait to share the finished project once the house and the rest of the garden are complete!
