Story time… 📖

Once upon a time, a little nail tech called Vicky got far too enthusiastic about changing her own nails. 😅 Between frequent removals and using my non-dominant hand with an e-file, I ended up causing trauma to my natural nails.

Yep… that’s my hand. 🙈

I wanted to share this because we often only see the perfect, finished sets online, but we don’t always see what can happen when our natural nails are put under too much stress.

This is what trauma-induced onycholysis can look like. As you can see, I trimmed my nails right back and carefully removed the lifted areas where appropriate. Unfortunately, because the nails were so damaged, they continued to lift as they grew.

To help protect them, I added a structured overlay. Since then, my nails have finally stopped lifting and are growing out healthy again. 💚

It’s been a good reminder that even as nail techs, we’re not immune to making mistakes. Sometimes our own nails teach us the biggest lessons.

If you’re experiencing lifting, don’t ignore it. Find the cause, be patient, and give your natural nails the care they need. Healing takes time, but they can recover. ✨
