Breathing techniques for balancing the nervous system ✨

Key Reasons Sound Therapy Benefits the Nervous System:

Activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System: Sound waves (eg from singing bowls or gongs) encourage the body to move away from stress responses and into a deeply relaxed, restorative state.

Stimulates the Vagus Nerve: Sound healing techniques like vocal toning or listening to instruments stimulate the vagus nerve, which is central to regulating heart rate, digestion, and stress, leading to higher vagal tone (better stress resilience).

Reduces Stress Markers: Studies show that sound therapy decreases cortisol levels, blood pressure, and heart rate, which directly reduces physiological stress on the nervous system.

Brainwave Entrainment: Rhythmic, consistent sounds (like drumming or bowls) can induce frequency-following responses, slowing down brainwaves from active beta states to calmer alpha, theta, or delta states.

Vibrational Impact on Cells: Because the body is largely water, sound vibrations travel through the body, which can help ease physical tension, reduce inflammation, and support cellular healing.

Somatic shaking is a great practice you can use for a few seconds every morning or when you need to discharge excess adrenaline - it’s where you shake your entire body (every limb) for 1-2 minutes.

1. This resets the nervous system
When you experience stress, your body activates fight, flight, or freeze. If that energy doesn’t discharge, it can get “stuck.”
Somatic shaking helps the nervous system complete the stress response and return to a calmer, regulated state (parasympathetic activation).

2. Enhances body awareness and safety
Somatic practices increase interoception (awareness of internal sensations). This builds a sense of safety and trust in the body—important for trauma recovery.

3. 3. Improves emotional regulation
People often feel:
* calmer
* clearer
* less emotionally reactive
after shaking.
That’s because the body processes emotions bottom-up (through sensation and movement), not only through thoughts.
