Who would expect a soldier to redesign civic life?
Marcus Agrippa is remembered as the military commander who helped Augustus forge the Roman Empire through conquest, siege, and bloodshed. Yet his most enduring legacy might not be military at all.
Around 25 BCE, he built and gifted one of Rome’s first great public bath houses: the Thermae Agrippae.
This wasn’t simply a place to wash. It was a place to exercise, meet friends, conduct business, receive massages, discuss politics, and spend hours immersed in water, steam, and scented oils.
As the Roman Empire expanded, so did the idea. Bath houses appeared from Britannia to North Africa and across the eastern Mediterranean, shaping how millions of people spent their leisure time.
Two thousand years later, we still recognise the format.
The spa. The thermal circuit. The wellness club. The bath house.
39BC oils use MIPA sulphates to cleanse you.
When we were developing our bath and shower oils, we wanted to create a product that transformed beautifully in water, rinsed cleanly, and left skin feeling soft and conditioned afterwards.
Many traditional foaming products rely on SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) or SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), which are highly effective cleansers but can feel too aggressive for the kind of bathing experience we wanted to create.
Instead, we use MIPA-Laureth Sulfate as part of our cleansing system. It helps our oils transform into a silky milk on contact with water, creating a soft, elegant foam while maintaining the rich, nourishing feel of the oils.
The goal was never the biggest bubbles.
The goal was water that feels luxurious, skin that feels comfortable, and a fragrance that lingers long after you've stepped out of the bath.
Because at 39BC, bathing isn't only about getting clean. It's about creating a moment you'll want to return to everyday.

Forecasting heavy showers in London town ⛈️⚡️🌧
As we've researched bathing cultures around the world, one thing has continually surprised us: how similar they are.
The architecture changes. The ingredients change. The language changes. Yet whether we are studying a Roman thermae, a Japanese onsen, a Moroccan hammam, a Korean bathhouse or a Mesoamerican steam bath, the same rhythm appears again and again.
There is a moment of preparation. A moment of cleansing. A period of immersion. And finally, a return to the world, often marked by oils, fragrance or other acts of care.
Different cultures arrived at different expressions of the same idea: that bathing is not simply about washing the body. It is about changing one's state.
The 39BC bathing philosophy is our interpretation of that timeless pattern:
Prepare. Purify. Soak. Seal.
Four simple stages for slowing down, caring for the body, and returning to yourself.

The clean feeling of cool water against overheated skin. Open windows. Damp hair. Linen drying somewhere in the background. The body returning slowly to itself after a long, hot day.
SAGE WATER was created for exactly this mood. The scent opens with the clarity of a waterfall and the moisture of moss, before settling into a fine salt.
Its the feeling of a 6pm bath to wash off the summer sweat before supper.
