Let's talk about disguised employment. 👀

It's also called false self-employment, when someone is officially classed as self-employed, but in practice is treated and controlled like an employee. It's more common than people realise, and it can mean missing out on things you may actually be entitled to, like holiday pay, sick pay or pension contributions.

None of these alone means you're automatically a disguised employee, but if any of this feels familiar and you're not sure where you stand, you don't have to figure it out alone.

Ten years ago, Lisa Curtis stood on the Inspire stage collecting the Bridal Hair Stylist of the Year award, in her first year of styling brides. This year, she was back as an educator and exhibitor. "A real pinch me moment," she calls it.

But the story in between is the one that matters. Before bridal styling, Lisa had stepped back from hairdressing to raise her children and lost her confidence along the way. Joining the FHA in 2014 changed that. "I was soon welcomed with open arms to a community where everyone supported each other. I no longer felt alone, I felt part of something."

That award kickstarted a bridal specialism, an education platform with 45+ tutorials, and a career built on the community that helped her find her way back in.
