Delighted to welcome Lord Rhys to Cwmni Molchi Da today at the Eisteddfod Rhys ap Gruffydd, better known as Lord Rhys, is regarded as the founder of the Eisteddfod tradition.

In 1176, after rebuilding Cardigan Castle, Lord Rhys invited poets, musicians and bards from across Wales and the Celtic lands to compete in what is recognised as the first recorded Eisteddfod. Winners received prestigious prizes for excellence in poetry and music, establishing a tradition that has continued for 850 years.

This years 2026 National Eisteddfod is especially significant because it marks the 850th anniversary of that original gathering. The festival has returned to the Cardigan area, close to where Lord Rhys held the first Eisteddfod, celebrating his lasting contribution to Welsh language, literature and culture. A giant puppet of Lord Rhys has also featured in this year’s celebrations, bringing his story to life for visitors.

Today, Lord Rhys is remembered not only as one of medieval Wales’ greatest rulers but also as a champion of Welsh culture whose vision created a tradition that remains at the heart of Welsh identity.
