Five Minutes a Day to Keep Your Body Moving

Could just five minutes of movement each day help you feel less stiff? When it comes to mobility, small, consistent efforts can be surprisingly worthwhile.

Mobility training involves controlled movements that encourage your joints to move through their available range of motion. Unlike holding a traditional stretch, these exercises combine movement, coordination and muscular control.

You can practise mobility almost anywhere: first thing in the morning, during a work break or after exercising. Hip rotations, gentle spinal movements and shoulder exercises are all useful options.

If you're new to mobility training, begin with two or three sessions a week and gradually increase the frequency as your body adapts. There's no need to push through discomfort or force yourself into difficult positions.

Notice how everyday movements feel over time. Are you turning more easily, bending more comfortably or feeling less restricted?

The secret isn't necessarily doing more. It's making regular, comfortable movement part of your daily routine.

Three Simple Mobility Exercises Worth Trying

Feeling stiff after sitting for hours? A few gentle mobility exercises could help your body move more comfortably. Here are three simple movements worth adding to your routine.

Cat-Cow: Start on your hands and knees. Slowly round your back towards the ceiling, then gently reverse the movement, lifting your chest and allowing your spine to arch comfortably. Repeat eight times to encourage spinal movement.

90/90 Hip Switch: Sit on the floor with your knees bent and feet apart. Keeping your heels in place, slowly lower both knees towards one side, return to the centre, then move towards the other side. Repeat six times to encourage hip rotation.

Thread the Needle: On all fours, reach one arm towards the ceiling, then sweep it underneath your body, gently rotating your upper back. Repeat six times on each side.

Move slowly, breathe naturally and stay within a comfortable range. These exercises require no special equipment and can fit easily into your day.

Why Mobility Matters More Than You Think

When we think about staying fit, walking, swimming and strength training often spring to mind. But there's another important ingredient in the healthy ageing equation: mobility.

Mobility is your ability to move your joints freely and with control. It's something we rely on constantly, whether we're reaching into a cupboard, getting out of a chair, climbing stairs or bending to tie our shoes.

As we age, or spend long periods sitting, certain movements can become more restricted. Hips may feel stiff, shoulders less comfortable and everyday tasks more challenging.

The encouraging news is that mobility can be improved with regular practice. Simple movements that gently take joints through their available range of motion can help maintain flexibility, strength and coordination.

You don't need expensive equipment or a gym membership, either. Just a few minutes of purposeful movement throughout the day can make a difference.

Think of mobility training as an investment in your future independence and quality of life.
