I test quite a lot of music equipment for singers, bands and DJs etc. Its not very often you get to see that equipment in use but last night we went to see a client perform.
Daniel Herrod was at The Farm Road Sports & Social Club we had a great night, if Danny is performing near you get yourself along and support a top act. It was also nice to see clubland is very much still alive and kicking.

A few recent discoveries by MB PAT Solutions,

1) A counterfeit adapter this one contained a non compliant fuse that doesn’t meet the British safety standards. Also the transformer itself was extremely lightweight.

2) A non compliant plug these do not meet the British safety standards for a number of reasons, no fuse, too small, insulated earth pin. If you have a product with this type of plug it is a sub standard product. Stop using it and return it to the supplier.

3) Those little shutters on a uk socket stop access to live parts they should only retract when you insert a plug. Those on the left hand socket of this extension are stuck open.

4)This hairdryer cable had come in to contact with the hot hair straighteners. A common finding in salons, many use hooks and hangers that hang these items close together often not realising the dangers.

5) All new electrical items in the uk are supplied with a cardboard wiring diagram attached to the plug. This is intended to be removed before using your product. Under fault conditions plugs often get hot and this piece of cardboard acts as the perfect fire tinder.

Another dangerous plug discovered recently. The concerning thing was that this had a previous pass label attached !
These plugs do not meet the requirements of BS1363 they are…

❌ Too Small
❌ Have No Fuse
❌ Have An Insulated Earth Pin

A bittersweet moment for me this morning. Ive had to tell a customer I couldn’t help as I was fully booked until September. While this is good for me now, I know that in a couple of months when things are a little quieter I’d be very grateful for this job.

They needed it within 3 working days, while short notice appointments are sometimes available it’s always best to get booked in as far in advance as possible.

You’ll notice that the shutters on the left hand socket are permanently open. This is a fail on the visual inspection.

Those shutters are a mechanical barrier to prevent access to live parts. They should only retract when the plug is inserted.

⚠️ Urgent recall: B&Q Table Fan 23cm (9") White Table Fan due to a risk of electric shock and fire.

The recall affects:
• Model: FT23A
• Barcode: 5063022605689
• Batch numbers: 25W50, 26W05, 26W11

The fan was sold between March 2026 and July 2026.
A fault within the oscillation mechanism can damage the internal wiring, creating a risk of electric shock and fire.

If you have one of the affected fans, stop using it immediately and return it to your nearest B&Q store.
