TPO CLARIFICATION 🤍

You may have seen a few things circulating recently online about TPO and the “gel nail ban”, so I just wanted to clear a few things up because there is A LOT of confusion & misinformation around it!

TPO stands for Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide and it’s a photoinitiator — basically, one of the ingredients that helps your gel cure and turn from a liquid into a solid when exposed to UV/LED light.

TPO has been classified as potentially harmful to reproduction at extremely high levels of exposure. The testing behind this classification involved animal studies using much higher levels of exposure than you would get from a typical gel manicure.

This is where I think things have become a little scary online, along with a lot of misinformation circulating, with people saying TPO causes infertility, cancer, mutations and changes to your DNA - which is extreme worst case scenario.

The important thing to understand is that these findings relate to extremely high exposure levels. The amount of TPO used in a typical gel product is extremely small, and the amount you’re actually exposed to during a normal nail appointment is even lower.

So this isn’t a case of “TPO has been proven to cause infertility because you’ve had your nails done.”

The ban is essentially a precaution because of the way the ingredient has been classified — it doesn’t mean that gel manicures have suddenly been found to be dangerous.

And most importantly…

GEL NAILS ARE NOT BEING BANNED! 🤍

The change is specifically about TPO, and there are also transitional arrangements for professional nail techs. Existing TPO products can still be used by professionals after February 2027 until they’re used up. Once that stock has been used, any new products purchased will need to comply with the new requirements and won’t contain TPO.

So please don’t panic, and please don’t be put off having your nails done because of something you’ve seen online! 🫶🏻

I’m keeping up with the changes and will always make sure I’m following the correct guidance when it comes to the products I use.
