Jaguarundi: Near Threatened – Regular reviews of status required
The Jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi) has been reassessed on the IUCN Red List and is now classified as Near Threatened, reflecting ongoing declines and growing concern over the species' future. Although the species was previously considered to be relatively common due to their daytime activity and wide distribution across the Americas, new evidence shows that Jaguarundis are rarer than previously believed, occurring at very low densities throughout much of their range. The assessment indicates a suspected ongoing population decline of more than 20% over three generations, driven primarily by habitat loss and fragmentation, expanding agriculture, increasing wildfires, road mortality, disease transmission from domestic dogs and cats, and human-wildlife conflict. Despite these challenges, conservation efforts are underway across the species' range, including population monitoring, community-based conflict mitigation, disease management programmes, habitat protection initiatives, and education and outreach activities. The assessment highlights the need to protect and reconnect remaining habitat and strengthen long-term monitoring to better understand population trends. Acting now will be critical to reversing declines and ensuring that this unique small cat does not move closer to a threatened category in the future.
