I am not sure which ministry is responsible, but this issue urgently needs government attention.

In Namibia, dangerous acids such as sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid are being sold too freely. These are extremely hazardous substances and should only be purchased under a strict licensing system. While some of us use these acids legitimately—for manufacturing detergents, purified water, toilet cleaners, industrial floor cleaners, and aluminium cleaners—criminals are taking advantage of easy access and using them for harmful and violent acts.

I work in the manufacturing industry, and I understand these chemicals very well. I use them professionally, with proper safety knowledge and protective equipment. That is why the tragic death of the late Magistrate Ms. Justine Kapandu Shiweda has deeply affected me. I did not know her personally, nor do I know her family, but I understand the severity and cruelty of acid attacks. No human being deserves to suffer in that way.

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, colleagues, and the entire judicial community mourning the late Magistrate Ms. Justine Kapandu Shiweda. This was a brutal and heartbreaking loss. May her soul rest in peace, and may her family find strength and comfort during this devastating time.

Let me be very clear about how dangerous these substances are:

• Sulphuric acid is so strong that even when it is stored in a clear plastic container, you cannot safely look at it for more than a short time without protective goggles, gloves, and overalls. Exposure can cause dizziness and physical weakness almost immediately.
• Hydrochloric acid, if spilled, reacts violently—boiling and releasing harmful fumes like a pot of boiling water.
• Even a small leak from a damaged container can cause severe burns and injury. In my experience, acid exposure is more dangerous than a gas leak.
These chemicals are not ordinary products. In the wrong hands, they become weapons.

People who misuse these acids should never be allowed to act without accountability, because their actions cause unimaginable pain, lifelong injuries, and death. Families lose their loved ones in the most brutal way possible.

I strongly call on the relevant Namibian ministries to:
• Introduce strict licensing and tracking for the sale and distribution of industrial acids
• Limit access only to verified businesses and trained professionals
• Enforce harsh penalties for misuse

This tragedy must not be ignored. Protecting lives must come before convenience.
