Abia State Government Cancels August 2026 Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise

The Abia State Government has announced the cancellation of the Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise scheduled to take place on Saturday, 29th August 2026, across the State.

According to the release authorised by the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, all citizens and residents of the State are urged to continue to keep their homes, business premises, streets and immediate surroundings clean and healthy, despite the cancellation of the exercise.

The Government emphasises that environmental cleanliness is a collective responsibility and should not be observed only during the officially designated monthly sanitation exercise.

Residents are therefore encouraged to properly dispose of their waste, clear blocked drainage channels, maintain clean surroundings and desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

The State Government appreciates the cooperation and support of Ndi Abia in its continued efforts to promote a clean, healthy and environmentally sustainable State.

Before you spend your next #10, ask yourself: why is Alvan Ikoku on the note?

Most people recognise his face. Far fewer know the story behind it.

This is the story of the Igbo educator whose work helped shape education in Eastern Nigeria.

Born in 1900 in Arochukwu, Abia State, Alvan Azinna Ikoku was an educator, nationalist, politician and one of the pioneers who transformed education in Eastern Nigeria.

Unable to travel abroad for university, he studied through correspondence and earned a Philosophy degree from the University of London in 1928. But his greatest legacy was not the degree he earned; it was the education he brought to others.

From Arochukwu, Alvan Ikoku established primary schools across Eastern Nigeria and travelled long distances to inspect them. In 1932, he founded Aggrey Memorial College in Arochukwu, one of the earliest indigenous private secondary schools in the region. He also encouraged education among ordinary families, even accepting farm produce such as yams and cassava as payment for school fees.

He later became a prominent voice for teachers and educational reform, serving as President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers and advocating policies that would expand access to education.
His contribution to education was so significant that the Federal Government immortalised him on the #10 note, while the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education in Owerri was named in his honour.

Alvan Ikoku died on November 18, 1971, in Aba, but his legacy lives on in the schools, educators and generations of students influenced by his vision.

Today, we remember a man who believed that educating one generation could transform an entire people.
