MR HOLLOWAY (6)
Stacy stepped back. “What are you?”
He smiled.
“I am what remains… when knowledge refuses to die.”
The atmosphere began to melt into darkness, the road dissolving into an endless void filled with floating pages—each one showing a trapped soul reliving their final moments.
Julie clutched the book. “We can free them, Stacy. That’s what this is.”
Mr. Holloway tilted his head. “Free them? No. They belong here. They complete me.”
With a flick of his hand, the ground beneath the girls cracked open. Black tendrils shot upward, grabbing at their legs.
Stacy kicked free, pulling Julie with her. “Run!”
They sprinted across the shifting floor, pages whipping around them like a storm.
Mr. Holloway didn’t chase.
He simply appeared in front of them.
Instantly.
“You opened the gate,” he said softly. “Now you’ll take their place.”
He lunged.
The room exploded into chaos.
Stacy grabbed a stone, swinging it as Holloway’s arm twisted toward her like smoke. It passed through the wood—then solidified—grabbing her throat.
She gasped, choking.
“Stacy!” Julie screamed.
The book slipped from her hands, landing open on the ground. The glowing symbols flared brighter, reacting.
Julie froze.
Then she understood.
“This isn’t just a prison…” she whispered. “It’s a lock.”
Mr. Holloway’s grip tightened around Stacy’s neck. “Too late.”
Julie’s fear melted into something else.
Resolve.
She picked up the book again, holding it close as the whispers grew louder—desperate now.
“Julie, don’t—” Stacy struggled to say.
Julie looked at her, tears streaming but smiling anyway.
“You always solve the puzzles,” she said softly. “So let me finish this one.”
“Julie, NO!”
Mr. Holloway turned sharply. “What are you doing?”
Julie flipped to the final page.
It was blank.
Until she pressed her hand onto it.
The ink surged upward, wrapping around her arm like chains.
She screamed—but didn’t pull away.
“The book needs a soul to break the spell,” she cried. “One willing to replace all the others!”
Mr. Holloway’s expression finally changed.
Fear.
“No—you don’t understand what you’re doing!”
Julie looked straight at Stacy.
“Make it matter.”
Then she slammed the book shut.
BOOM.
A blinding wave of light erupted outward.
Mr. Holloway screamed—not in anger, but in agony—as the faces within him began tearing free, bursting out like fragments of shattered glass.
The void cracked.
The floating pages ignited, dissolving into glowing embers as soul after soul was released—rising like stars into the darkness.
Stacy hit the ground hard, gasping as the pressure around her vanished.
“JULIE!” she screamed.
But Julie was gone.
In her place, the book hovered midair—now sealed, its cover etched with a single name that hadn’t been there before.
JULIE.
Mr. Holloway staggered, his body collapsing inward as the stolen souls abandoned him.
“You’ve… ruined everything…” he rasped.
His form began to crumble, unraveling into dust and shadow.
With one final, broken whisper—
He vanished.
