The Lantern by the River
In a quiet village surrounded by green hills, there lived an elderly woman named Ama who lit a small lantern every evening and placed it beside the river.
People often wondered why she did it.
“The moon is bright enough,” some would say.
“The fish do not need a lantern,” others laughed.
Ama would simply smile and reply, “The light is not for the river. It is for anyone who feels lost.”
One rainy night, a young traveler arrived in the village after taking a wrong path through the forest. Tired, soaked, and worried, he noticed a warm glow in the distance. He followed it and found the lantern by the river, with Ama waiting nearby under a little shelter.
She welcomed him with dry clothes, a bowl of hot soup, and a place to rest.
The next morning, the traveler thanked her and asked, “How did you know someone would need your light?”
Ama looked at the rising sun and said, “I didn’t. But kindness does not wait for certainty. Sometimes the smallest light reaches the person who needs it most.”
Years passed, and the traveler grew older. He returned to the village with his own lantern, placing it beside Ama’s every evening. Soon others joined in. Before long, the riverbank sparkled with dozens of gentle lights.
And whenever storms came or darkness seemed too heavy, no one in the village felt completely alone. They knew that somewhere ahead, a lantern was waiting, quietly reminding them that hope can shine even on the darkest nights.
