URGENT ADVISORY: THE DEADLY REALITY OF STOWAWAY MIGRATION
A Recent Wake-Up Call
A young man recently hid inside a vessel departing from Lomé, Togo, bound for Italy. For five days, no one knew he was there. On the fifth day, crew members heard a desperate voice crying out for help—he was dying. This is not an isolated incident. This is a preventable tragedy.
The Harsh Truth About Stowaway Travel
This is not a path to a better life. This is a path to death.
What Really Happens:
- No food, no water: Stowaways can go days without basic necessities
- Extreme temperatures: Cargo holds and engine rooms can reach deadly heat or freezing cold
- Toxic fumes: Many hiding spaces expose you to poisonous gases and chemicals
- Crushing injuries: Shifting cargo can trap and kill
- Suffocation: Limited oxygen in sealed compartments
- No medical help: When emergencies happen at sea, rescue is often impossible
The Statistics Don't Lie:
- Most stowaways do not survive the journey
- Those who do survive often suffer permanent health damage
- Even if you reach your destination, deportation is almost certain
- You risk criminal charges in multiple countries
If You're Considering This Path
Ask Yourself:
- Is risking my life worth the uncertain dream of reaching Europe?
- What will my family do if I die at sea and my body is never recovered?
- Are there legal pathways I haven't fully explored?
Know This:
- European immigration officials routinely search vessels
- Modern port security makes successful stowaway travel nearly impossible
- Even successful entry leads to undocumented status with no rights or protections
Better Alternatives Exist
Legal Migration Options:
- Work visa programs: Many countries have legitimate labor migration schemes
- Educational opportunities: Scholarship programs and student visas
- Refugee and asylum processes: For those fleeing persecution
- Skills-based immigration: Professional qualification pathway
Resources for Help:
- Contact the International Organization for Migration (IOM) offices in your country
- Seek information from official embassy websites
- Speak with legitimate migration counselors and NGOs
- Explore entrepreneurship and business opportunities in your home country
To Families and Communities
If someone you know is considering stowaway travel:
- Talk to them openly about the real dangers
- Share survivor stories of those who barely escaped death
- Connect them with legitimate resources for safe migration
- Report suspicious recruiters who promise safe passage as stowaways
The Message is Clear
Stowaway migration is not brave—it's a death trap set by desperation and fueled by misinformation.
Your life has value. Your dreams have value. Don't throw them away in a cargo hold.

REMEMBER: No destination is worth your life. Choose legal, safe pathways. Choose life.

The significance of the New Year extends beyond the mere adoption of a new calendar; it represents our aspiration toward a renewed spirit—a revitalized soul, fortified resolve, enhanced clarity of vision, and an improved approach to living. Nevertheless, despite such aspirations, we frequently enter the first day of January still adorned in the attire of the previous evening, exchanging customary morning greetings, and utilizing the same toothbrush we employed on December 31st. This straightforward observation serves as a reminder that the transformation we associate with the New Year is not imposed by the passage of time itself, but rather by our deliberate choices. Time, after all, contains no inherent demarcations to herald its progression. There are no thunderstorms or fanfares to announce the commencement of a new month or year. Even at the dawn of a new century, it is only we, as human beings, who celebrate through vocalizations, songs, prayers, tears, the ringing of bells, and ceremonial gunfire.
The New Year, therefore, is not defined by the external manifestations of our celebrations, but by the internal changes we elect to embrace—a recognition that genuine transformation must originate from within ourselves.
Welcome to the year 2026. May it usher in renewed purpose, deeper wisdom, and meaningful growth for us all.
