CHIEF PAUL AGBAI OGWUMA: IDENTITY, ROOTS AND THE UNBROKEN BOND WITH NGWA LAND —by Dr. Max Nduaguibe.
It is a taboo for elders to sit and watch the goat deliver in thither. In the same vein, it would be a grave disservice for elders to remain silent while young men, whether through sociopolitical activism or pecuniary interests, distort our cultural genealogy and turn our history upside down.
In an age when history and identity are sometimes reshaped for convenience, the life of Chief Paul Agbai Ogwuma offers a compelling reminder that a man’s roots are not defined by political expediency, but by ancestry, tradition, community and the home he lived and built for himself.
Even as some younger people may seek to deceptively use migration to portray every community as a settlement of migrants, the historical reality remains that there are indigenous communities across Igboland, just as there are communities that have historically been regarded as settler communities.
It is therefore an abnormality for someone who is not historically indigenous to a place to deliberately appropriate the identity or ancestral heritage of its people. A man is either genuinely integrated into the community he calls home, with a clear understanding of his roots, or he risks creating unnecessary confusion about his identity.
For those who may not know him, Chief Paul Agbai Ogwuma was the Ngwa-born Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, serving from 1993 to 1999.
Some young scholars years ago While researching prominent indigenes of Abia State, came across the name “PAUL AGBAI OGWUMA.” as former governor of the Central Bank from IsialaNgwa. They were intrigued by his middle name "AGBAI" which wasn't particularly familiar with the Ngwa people but associated with Arochukwu, Abariba and Aro communities rather than being indigenous to Ngwa.
Further research led them to the historical Aro connection in parts of Ngwa land, providing context for why a prominent IsialaNgwa indigene such as Chief Paul Ogwuma bore the name “Agbai.” This connection can be traced to the era of Aro migration and settlement across parts of the Igbo hinterland.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Aro people established highly organised mercantile settlements across Igboland and other regions, some of which developed into enduring communities. In Isiala Ngwa alone, there are well-known historical Aro-associated communities such as Aro Achara, Aro Umu Nkpe, Aro Nbawsi, Aro Omoba, Aro Eziala Nsulu, Aro Umu Eru and Aro Umu Aro.
But Chief Paul Agbai Ogwuma never needed to reinvent where he called home.
Traditionally, when an Igbo man comes of age and has the means, he is expected to establish his village home on his father's compound. Chief Paul followed that tradition. He built his home in his community and remained firmly connected to his people of IsialaNgwa.
He did not wait for political convenience to alter his identity or suddenly embrace another ancestral origin because of changing political circumstances. His life is not defined by political expediency. His identity is lived, not manufactured.
Chief Paul Agbai Ogwuma remained a respected chief and elder of IsialaNgwa. He contributed to community development efforts and used his stature, relationships and influence to draw attention to the needs of his people.
It is on record that Chief Paul Ogwuma was among those that championed the creation of Abia State. He personally constructed the road that traverses Okpuala Ngwa, passing through the compound of Eze Bernard Enweremadu in Ahiaba to Ntigha and out to the Umuahia/Aba Express Road. He also did Amapu to Umuvo to Eke Akpara Osisioma road.
His contribution, however, went beyond physical infrastructure.
He opened doors for many Ngwa people. He encouraged our young men and women to pursue professional careers and, through his influence in banking and public service, helped create opportunities for many people who might otherwise have struggled to find their footing.
His impact was particularly felt in human-capital development. He believed in giving his people opportunities to become something with their own lives. His influence helped many sons and daughters of Ngwa gain access to career opportunities in banking, accounting and public service.
He supported young people through educational scholarships and actively participated in community-development initiatives, particularly in his home area of IsialaNgwa.
From his words and actions throughout his active days, Chief Paul Agbai Ogwuma demonstrated a deep attachment to his Ngwa roots. He never created controversy about his identity, nor did he seek to distance himself from Ala Ngwa.
His life remains a reminder that identity is not merely a label to be adopted when convenient. It is rooted in history, family, tradition, community and the enduring bonds a person maintains with his people.
Chief Paul Agbai Ogwuma is not merely a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He is a man who knew his roots, lived among his people, invested in them and left behind a legacy that continues to speak for itself.

Governor Alex C. Otti's government claimed that they built and rehabilitated public schools in Abia State between 2023 & 2025, with the sum of N115.4bn, according to the state's Accountant General Reports.
Many Abians have complained that no schools were built or rehabilitated between 2023 & 2025 apart from 2 schools, and are demanding the return of the funds to state coffers.
A group of Abians in the UK and USA has increased the challenge to ₦50 MILLION, for anyone with credible evidence of these schools to win N50m.

WHAT IS MAKING WAVES IN AGALABA?
O BU HON. KELECHI EBERE SETH.
Let me just share something with you people.
Yesterday, while coming back from Umuahia, I entered bike of one of my brothers from Ward 9 who has a candidate in ZLP.
As we were going, I asked him, “Nwanne, what is una fate concerning the Supreme Court judgment?”
The guy started defending his principal with plenty clauses 😂. I understand him very well because media work is not easy.
I asked him again, “I know you don't have a House of Assembly member candidate, but who do you think will win this race?”
He looked at me and said:
“Nwanne, I’m not saying this to make you feel good, but everybody knows that Seth is very strong in this race. Who knows other candidates apart from social media? Seth has been in the business.”
I just smiled.
That was our conversation yesterday evening.
But before then, something happened in the morning.
While I was going to a hospital at Nigeria Christian Hospital Nlagu to see a friend, one man of God who was coming from my village and heading to Aba gave me a lift.
But immediately he noticed that I was wearing Engr. Seth's campaign cap, he asked me:
“How is Engr. Seth, our incoming House of Assembly member, hopefully 2027?”
I said, “He is fine, Sir.”
I then asked him, “Sir, do you really think Hon. Kelechi Ebere Seth will win this election?”
He said, “You know I am not a politician, but before I address somebody as a House member come 2027, I know he has what it takes. God has already prepared a way for him. He is known, loved and cherished. We want young people with credible track record to be in leadership.”
Then he added:
“Please tell him he has Agalaba ministers' support.”
I just smiled and entered the hospital.
Even inside the hospital, everywhere I went, it was somehow Seth, Seth, Seth.
A young girl even came to me and said:
“Please, I was one of the beneficiaries of Seth Free Foundation. I want to have his cap and polo.”
I promised her that I will sort her out. Very soon, I will dash out three dozen.
Then early this week, on Monday, while I was passing somewhere to buy something, I saw my brothers and sisters in PDP.
I stopped and entered.
They were surprised because I was somehow putting on Labour Party clothes.
They asked me to greet them.
I stood up and greeted them because, after all, we know ourselves and we know the slogan:
PDP! Power to the People!
I smiled and told them:
“Umunne, I saw you people and decided to greet. Next time, I will support you people with even one bottle of drink.”
After all, they know where I stand.
One woman then told another woman:
“This guy is not playing bitter politics ooh.”
I heard her and I responded.
We are brothers and sisters before politics.
You have something, invite me. I will come and celebrate with you.
Politics will come and go, but brotherhood remains.
Why did I even enter there in the first place?
Beyond politics and all these things, I remembered one of my teachers in the Bible.
He said the worst thing you can do as a preacher is to pass a prostitute's house, Ulo Ashawo, without preaching to them.
You don't know whether God wants to save that person through you.
That thing stayed with me.
So, for me, politics should not make us enemies.
We can support different people and still eat together.
We can disagree politically and still greet each other.
We can contest elections and after everything, we remain brothers and sisters.
And honestly, from what I have been seeing and hearing around Agalaba, something is happening.
People are talking.
People are asking questions.
People are remembering the things Seth has been doing.
People are identifying with him.
And for me, Hon. Kelechi Ebere Seth has shown that he has the 3 Cs:
Competent.
Credible.
Capacity.
I believe he will bring a different style of leadership to Agalaba.
Agalaba deserves representation that will focus on sustainable development and the interest of the people.
Walk with us on this journey.
2027 is getting closer.

SETH O’CLOCK, NDI AGALABA!
Leadership is not something you suddenly learn when you get to office. It starts from the heart, from the way a person thinks, serves, relates with people and carries responsibility.
Hon. Engr. Kelechi Ebere Seth represents a generation of leadership built around vision, courage, humility and service.
His journey has shown a consistent desire to contribute to the growth and development of his people. Beyond politics, Seth has demonstrated that leadership is about identifying with the people, understanding their needs and being ready to stand with them.
Ndi Agalaba, this is about the kind of representation we want to see. A representative who can listen, speak, connect, build relationships and bring the interests of the people to the table.
Seth is not just asking for a position. He is presenting a vision for better representation and sustainable development in Agalaba.
The time is here.

We can't afford to lose gold while checking whether diamond will work.
Gold and diamond may both be precious, but they are not the same. Their value, acceptance and market demand are different. No matter how much you try to market what the people don't need, the market will always speak.
Seth is that gold.
He embodies many of the qualities we need as a people in Agalaba. His humility, accessibility, competence and credibility make him a man people can relate with and trust.
No unnecessary political baggage. No pretence. Just a man who understands the people and is ready to carry the Agalaba Project forward.
Competent. Credible. Capable.
After 2027, Agalaba needs a man who can stand for the people and work for the progress of our constituency.

"We are not going to create jobs just to make up the numbers for political statistics. “A man can sleep with 30–40 women and still end up marrying a woman who is ready to settle down with him. But a woman can sleep with 7–10 men and end up being rejected simply because of her past. There may hardly be any evidence that a man slept with those women, but there may be a lot of evidence that a woman slept with 7–10 men.”

The inauguration brought together members of the movement, Labour Party supporters, youths and other stakeholders who gathered to strengthen their support for the working Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, and the Labour Party candidates.
