A guy came to her shop this evening to withdraw ₦96,000. She collected his ATM card, inserted it into her POS machine, and entered ₦96,000. She then handed the machine to him to input his PIN while she was counting out the cash. After he finished, he gave the POS machine back to her, and she saw ‘Approved,’ so she handed him the ₦96,000.

A minute after he left, she checked her transaction history, only to discover that the transaction was for ₦9,600 instead of ₦96,000. Health officials are tracking a contagious ring-shaped rash caused by a fungus known as Trichophyton mentagrophytes genotype VII. Many people initially mistake it for eczema, ingrown hairs, chafing, or a simple skin irritation.

The infection spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact, including s*xual contact, and can also pass through shared towels, bedding, and clothing. Because of this, partners may repeatedly pass the infection back and forth without realizing it.

Doctors say this strain differs from common ringworm because it often does not respond to over-the-counter antifungal creams. Some patients have required prescription-strength oral antifungal medication for several weeks, and in some cases, up to three months before the infection fully cleared.

Symptoms include red circular rashes, itching, burning, and soreness that most commonly appear on the stomach, inner thighs, groin, buttocks, or face.

Medical experts advise avoiding intimate contact and not sharing personal items until the infection is completely resolved. Anyone with a spreading rash that does not improve with basic treatment is encouraged to seek medical evaluation promptly.
