‎THREE KILLED IN BENUE ATTACKS DAYS AFTER IGPS VISIT.
‎
‎The latest attacks in Ohimini came barely two days after Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu visited Benue and pledged intensified intelligence-driven operations to tackle insecurity.
‎
‎At least three people have been killed and two others injured in fresh attacks by suspected armed herders on Elulu and Agadagba communities in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.
‎
‎The attacks came two days after the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, visited the state and promised intensified security operations.
‎
‎The attacks, which occurred between Friday and Saturday night, are the latest on communities in Benue despite renewed security measures announced by federal and state authorities.
‎
‎The Chairman of Ohimini Local Government, Gabriel Adole, confirmed the attacks to journalists on Sunday.
‎
‎“It is not only in Agadagba community that the armed herders killed people. They first attacked Elulu village the day before yesterday, killed somebody, attacked another person and collected his Bajaj motorcycle,” Mr Adole said.
‎
‎“They also went to Agadagba village that very day to rustle cows, but the people repelled them. So, they shot one of them in the leg. They coudn’t rustle the cows from there again. Yesterday, being Saturday, they went out again and killed two persons in Agadagba.
‎
‎“As I am talking to you, I am even preparing to go to the communities to pay them condolences.
‎
‎“So far, three lives have been lost in the attacks. They injured two persons, the one whose bike they collected and the one they shot while attempting to rustle his cows. Both of them are still in the hospital receiving treatment.”
‎
‎A resident of Agadagba, who identified himself simply as Ameh, said the attackers attempted to rustle cattle before opening fire on residents who resisted them.
‎
‎“The Fulani herdsmen attacked our community yesterday night and attempted to rustle cows. Some youths repelled them, but because the attackers were heavily armed, they shot at the youths and two of them died,” he said.
‎
‎Mr Adole said community vigilantes and other security personnel had been deployed to the affected communities to prevent further attacks.
‎
‎According to him, Governor Hyacinth Alia had directed additional security support to the area.
‎
‎“The governor has actually mobilised me and I have also mobilised the community vigilantes because it is only the vigilantes that can get to where they are. I can assure you that with the adequate security provided by the governor in Ohimini, we will get those perpetrators.
‎
‎“The vigilantes are on ground and Alia has mobilised me to also mobilise them, which I have done. These marauders cannot drive us out of our land,” he said.
‎
‎The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Udeme Edet, could not be reached for comments as calls to her telephone line were not answered as of the time of filing this report.
‎
‎IGP’s visit
‎The fresh attacks came barely 48 hours after the Inspector-General of Police visited Benue for an operational assessment and a strategic security meeting with Governor Alia and other stakeholders.
‎
‎During the visit on Thursday, Mr Disu pledged intensified intelligence-led policing and urged residents to provide credible information to security agencies, assuring them that informants’ identities would be protected.
‎
‎Governor Alia, on his part, renewed his call for the establishment of state police, arguing that officers with local knowledge of communities and terrain would respond more effectively to security threats.
‎
‎The governor also pledged the state’s support for a proposed 14-day security sweep across Benue and reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that farmers could return safely to their communities.
‎
‎Earlier attacks
‎PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported that at least eight people were killed on 12 July when suspected armed herders attacked Otukpo-Nobi and Akpachi communities in neighbouring Otukpo Local Government Area.
‎
‎The attacks triggered protests by youths, who blocked major roads and demanded urgent government intervention to end the recurring violence.
‎
‎Amnesty International subsequently called for an independent investigation into the killings, warning that repeated attacks on rural communities had displaced hundreds of residents across Benue State.
‎
‎The latest assault also comes about a month after the killing of the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Risku Mohammed, and his associate, Yakubu Isah, who were ambushed and killed on 26 June while returning from a peace meeting in Ohimini Local Government Area.
‎
‎Following the killing, police announced the arrest of suspects connected to the incident, while several communities in Benue South expressed fears that subsequent attacks could be reprisals.
‎
‎Residents and community leaders have repeatedly called on the federal and Benue State governments to strengthen security in vulnerable rural communities to prevent further loss of lives.

‎BENUE ATTACKS: MOTHER, THREE OTHERS KILLED AS ARMED HERDSMEN INVADE TWO LGS.

‎At least four persons have reportedly been killed and several others, including children, injured in separate attacks by suspected armed herdsmen on communities in Ohimini and Ukum Local Government Areas, LGAs, of Benue State, sparking fresh concerns over the security situation in the state.
‎
‎The attackers were also said to have rustled several cattle, while many residents remain unaccounted for as local vigilantes and community members continue search operations in the affected areas.
‎
‎Residents said the attacks began on Friday night in the Elulu community, Ohimini LGA, where the gunmen allegedly killed a young man before making away with his motorcycle.
‎
‎The assailants reportedly proceeded to the nearby Agadagba community, where they attempted to rustle a large herd of cattle but were resisted by local youths after they had shots and injured one of the youths.
‎
‎According to a resident who preferred anonymity, the attackers returned to Agadagba on Saturday at about 7pm and opened fire indiscriminately on villagers, killing two persons and leaving several others with gunshot injuries.
‎
‎He said, “They killed two persons and injured many at Agadagba Village. This was after they killed a young man and snatched his motorcycle a day earlier at Elulu. They also attacked Ochobo in the same Ohimini LGA, where about four persons were shot.
‎
‎“There was also an attack in Ogoli-Ugboju the same day where two persons were shot, including a local ranch owner who survived, but many of his cows were rustled.
‎
‎“As we speak, this axis has become a dreaded area; people are fleeing their communities for fear of being killed. The armed herders attack at will and retreat into the forests. It is so sad that our people cannot have peace in their land anymore,” he said.
‎
‎Meanwhile, in a separate incident, suspected armed herders reportedly attacked Tse-Gbemshin in Mbazum, Mbaterem Council Ward of Ukum Local Government Area, at about 2:30am on Saturday.
‎
‎A local source disclosed that a woman was killed during the raid, while her children sustained severe machete injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
‎
‎“A mother was brutally killed while her children suffered deep machete cuts during the attack. The community is calling on the government and security agencies to investigate the incident, arrest those responsible, and strengthen security to prevent further attacks on innocent residents,” he said.
‎
‎Confirming the attacks in Ohimini, the chairman of the local government area, Mr. Gabriel Adole, said three persons had so far lost their lives in the council following the coordinated assaults.
‎
‎“It is not only in the Agadagba community. They attacked Elulu two days ago, killed somebody, attacked another person, and collected his Bajaj motorcycle. They also went to Agadagba that same day to rustle cows, but the youths resisted them. They shot one of the residents in the leg but failed to take the cattle. Yesterday (Saturday), they returned and killed two more persons,” Adole said.

‎The council chairman, however, assured residents that calm was gradually returning to the affected communities following the deployment of security personnel and mobilization of local vigilantes.
‎
‎“Normalcy is gradually returning because security personnel have been deployed. Governor Hyacinth Alia has mobilized all hands; the community vigilantes have also moved into the area because they are the ones who can easily access the difficult terrain where these attackers hide. They are on the ground now.
‎
‎“The marauders cannot drive us away from our ancestral land. Governor Alia has provided adequate support for security in Ohimini,” he stated.
‎
‎Meanwhile, efforts to obtain comments from the chairman of Ukum LGA, Mr. Jonathan Modi, were unsuccessful as calls placed to his phone were not answered.
‎
‎Similarly, the police public relations officer, DSP Udeme Edet, did not respond to telephone calls and text messages seeking confirmation of the incidents as of the time of filing this report.

‎ GUNMEN KILL TEENAGER, RUSTLE CATTLE IN FRESH BENUE ATTACK

‎Suspected armed men have attacked Olahimu village in Ogoli Ugboju, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, killing a 15-year-old boy and rustling several cattle in a fresh attack on the community.
‎
‎The attack, which reportedly occurred at about 7 a.m. on Tuesday, also left one person missing, while three others who were initially unaccounted for were later found after escaping from the assailants.
‎
‎The victims were said to be members of the family of the late Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Ardo Risku Muhammad, who was killed a few weeks ago in Okudu community, Otukpo LGA, while returning from a peace meeting in neighbouring Ohimini Local Government Area.

‎In a statement signed by Muhammed Idris on behalf of the family, the deceased was identified as Muhammad Isiyaku, while the missing person was identified as Saidu Musa, a family labourer.
‎
‎The statement added that although about 500 cattle were initially rustled, many had been recovered during search operations around the Okudu axis, while some animals were found dead and others remained missing.
‎
‎According to the family, three persons initially declared missing — Muhammed Ismaiel, 17; Muhammed Hamza, 13; and a labourer, Abu Ali — were later found alive after escaping from the attackers.
‎
‎The family condemned the attack and appealed to the Benue State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the missing labourer and recover the remaining stolen cattle.
‎
‎“We strongly condemn this act of violence, killing and cattle rustling. We appeal to the Benue State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, DSS and all security agencies to urgently intensify efforts to locate Saidu Musa and recover the remaining missing cattle.
‎
‎“We also call for increased security presence in Olahimu, Ogoli Ugboju and other border communities to prevent further attacks and a breakdown of law and order,” the statement read.
‎
‎Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, said he received a distress call while the attack was ongoing and immediately alerted security agencies and community leaders.
‎
‎According to him, “Idris called me that an attack on their herd was ongoing and that he was more concerned about the survival of his younger ones who were taking care of the cattle.
‎
‎“I immediately contacted the District Head, the Divisional Police Officer and the youth leader, who mobilised to the area. Later, Idris informed me that they found one of his brothers dead, while the others who were initially missing were eventually located, except one labourer. The cows were nowhere to be found.”
‎
‎Ogiri lamented the rising cases of cattle rustling and armed attacks in the area, recalling that only a few days earlier, suspected bandits rustled more than 50 cattle from a private ranch in Jericho village and had also been attacking communities to loot food items and other valuables.
‎
‎He said the latest attacks had forced many residents to flee their homes and abandon their farms at the peak of the farming season.
‎
‎When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said she had yet to receive detailed information on the incident.

‎BENUE INSECURITY WON'T BE TOLERATED AGAIN, IGP DISU DECLARES
‎
‎The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, on Thursday declared the worsening insecurity in Benue State “unacceptable”, saying the violence had become a source of sleepless nights for residents and security agencies, as he announced a 14-day security operation to flush out criminals from identified flashpoints across the state.
‎
‎Speaking at a town hall meeting with stakeholders in Makurdi, the IGP said President Bola Tinubu had directed security agencies to ensure that the wave of killings and other violent crimes in the state was brought to an end.
‎
‎Describing Benue as a state once renowned for peace and hospitality, Disu lamented that it had been overtaken by violence fuelled by armed criminal herders, kidnappers, bandits, cultists and other criminal gangs, warning that the cycle of attacks and reprisals must stop.
‎
‎“The insecurity in Benue is unacceptable. It has become a source of sleepless nights for the people and security agencies. Mr. President has made it clear that this situation will no longer be tolerated,” he said.
‎
‎The police boss cautioned youths against allowing themselves to be recruited by politicians and other influential individuals to perpetrate violence, particularly during elections. “Young people often bear the greatest burden of these conflicts. Do not allow yourselves to be used as political thugs or agents of violence,” he warned.
‎
‎Disu also warned that only authorised security personnel were permitted to bear arms, stressing that the police would clamp down on illegal fi****ms and armed criminals.
‎
‎He disclosed that officers had been directed to act decisively in line with Force Order 237 whenever confronted by armed criminals, while assuring residents that complaints against erring police officers would be thoroughly investigated.
‎
‎The IGP urged traditional rulers, elders, religious leaders and community members to support security agencies with credible intelligence, promising to make Benue a regular destination until peace was restored.
‎
‎“The police belong to the people. We are here to serve, not to dominate. I will continue to visit Benue until lasting peace returns,” he stated.
‎
‎Also speaking, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Police Mobile Force, Mr. Francis Iduh, announced that security agencies had identified 14 major flashpoints across the state for intensive operations.

‎According to him, communities including Bajimba, Arufu, Agasha, Kwande, Agatu, Naka, Otukpo, Makurdi, Apa and other vulnerable areas would witness a 14-day stability and clearance operation aimed at reclaiming forests, farmlands and criminal hideouts.

‎“If communities partner with us and provide credible intelligence, we will deal with criminals without criminalising law-abiding citizens,” Iduh said.
‎
‎Governor Hyacinth Alia, who welcomed the IGP and his delegation, described the visit as timely, noting that insecurity had continued to threaten lives, farming activities and the state’s position as Nigeria’s food basket.
‎
‎He said his administration had continued to support security agencies with operational vehicles, motorcycles, communication equipment and logistics, while pledging full backing for the planned security operation.
‎
‎Alia also reiterated his support for the establishment of state police, arguing that officers familiar with the local terrain and communities would be more effective in tackling insecurity. “The debate should no longer be whether we need state police, but how it should operate,” the Governor said.
‎
‎The Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ayatse, identified armed criminal herders, indigenous armed gangs, communal conflicts and cult groups as the major security threats confronting the state, alleging that some politicians might be benefiting from the insecurity and urging the police to investigate possible sponsors.
‎
‎He lamented that many communities had been displaced despite repeated intelligence reports warning of impending attacks and pledged the support of Benue people in restoring peace.
‎
‎Also speaking, the Benue State Chairman of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Alhaji Garba Baba, said Muslims in the state remained committed to peaceful coexistence and supported the government’s efforts to end insecurity.
‎
‎Similarly, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the state, Rev. Jonathan Terwase Ugbede, urged the police to respond promptly to security threats, especially those circulated on social media, and advocated sustained engagement with traditional rulers, youths and religious leaders to improve intelligence gathering.
‎
‎The meeting ended with a consensus among stakeholders that the security crisis in Benue had become multifaceted, involving armed herders, kidnappers, cultists, criminal gangs and alleged political interests, with participants agreeing that lasting peace could only be achieved through stronger collaboration between security agencies and local communities.

‎BENUE OFFICIAL MAKES CASE FOR ALIA'S RE-ELECTION
‎
‎Benue State project coordinator of the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), Dr Stephen Numbeve, has urged the people to support Governor Hyacinth Alia’s re-election in 2027.
‎
‎He said continuity is necessary to consolidate the administration’s reforms and sustain the state’s development.
‎
‎Numbeve, who is also a governance commentator specialising in public policy and rural development, said the Alia administration had recorded notable achievements in infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare, industrialisation and governance since assuming office in May 2023.
‎
‎“As Benue State charts its course toward the 2027 governorship election, one fundamental question should guide our collective conscience: What truly serves Benue’s best interests? The answer, in my view, is unambiguous—continuity, stability and the consolidation of the transformative reforms initiated by Governor Hyacinth Alia,” he said.
‎
‎He acknowledged that no administration is without shortcomings but argued that the governor’s achievements should be assessed objectively rather than through partisan considerations.
‎
‎“No administration is flawless, and Governor Alia’s is no exception. Yet fairness demands that we do not dismiss remarkable achievements simply to satisfy political appetites. Those who genuinely love Benue must prioritise the state’s long-term development over personal ambitions and partisan calculations,” he stated.
‎
‎According to Numbeve, Governor Alia inherited prolonged salary and pension arrears, insecurity, poor infrastructure, economic stagnation and declining public confidence in government but responded with reforms aimed at rebuilding the state’s institutional and economic foundations.
‎
‎He said one of the administration’s major achievements was infrastructure development.
‎
‎“Over 500 kilometres of premium-quality roads have been constructed, including the first-ever underpasses in Makurdi and Gboko. Rural connectivity initiatives have transformed farming communities’ access to markets, directly stimulating agricultural commerce and economic activity across hinterland regions,” he said.
‎
‎Numbeve added that the administration restored the Benue State Secretariat, originally built during the administration of the late Governor Aper Aku, after years of neglect.
‎
‎On agriculture, he said the government had expanded access to quality farm inputs, mechanisation programmes, irrigation initiatives, agro-processing support and farmer empowerment schemes.
‎
‎Highlighting the impact of RAAMP, Numbeve said the project had become a catalyst for rural transformation.
‎
‎“More than 140 culverts and bridges have been constructed across the state, post-harvest losses have been reduced, market access for smallholder farmers has improved, while community investment and economic revitalisation have been strengthened,” he said.
‎
‎He also commended the administration for ensuring regular payment of salaries, pensions and gratuities.
‎
‎“Governor Alia’s unwavering commitment to the prompt payment of salaries, pensions and gratuities has restored dignity to the civil service and renewed public confidence in government,” he said.
‎
‎Numbeve further praised the administration’s inclusion of young professionals in strategic government positions, describing it as a merit-based approach that had encouraged innovation and renewed youth participation in governance.
‎
‎Speaking on economic reforms, he said the Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC), under the management of Dr. Raymond Asemakaha, had witnessed significant revival.
‎
‎“Orange concentrate production has been restored, Taraku Mills is positioned for production restart, while the company has expanded into nail manufacturing, bread production, bottled water production, housing, transportation and industrial production. These are not mere projects; they represent employment opportunities, wealth creation and catalysts for private-sector participation,” he said.
‎
‎He also cited the revival of Benue Links Nigeria Limited through the acquisition of 100 new buses, saying the intervention rescued the company from liquidation and restored confidence in public transportation.
‎
‎On education, Numbeve said the administration had recruited and deployed 9,700 teachers into public primary schools, constructed ultra-modern multi-storey school buildings, established the University of Agriculture and Science Technology at Ihugh, Vandeikya, and created a Moses Orshio Adasu University satellite campus in Kwande Local Government Area, with another campus planned for Benue South Senatorial District.

‎He added that the Benue State University Teaching Hospital had been equipped with modern medical facilities capable of handling complex medical procedures for patients from Benue and neighbouring states.
‎
‎Addressing security, Numbeve acknowledged that insecurity remained a challenge but said the administration had strengthened collaboration with security agencies, supported community-based security initiatives, improved surveillance and intelligence gathering, and continued to advocate the establishment of state police.
‎
‎He also commended the administration’s consultations with traditional rulers, religious leaders, labour unions, youth and women groups, professional bodies and development partners, saying the approach had strengthened inclusive governance.
‎
‎ Numbeve said the people should focus on measurable performance.
‎
‎“If a government is visibly transforming infrastructure, reviving industries, expanding education, strengthening healthcare and restoring confidence in governance, should such a government be replaced simply because another election has come? Should Benue interrupt reforms that are already producing measurable results before they reach full maturity?” he asked.
‎
‎He further questioned whether critics had presented a better development blueprint, whether workers and pensioners should gamble with an administration that now pays salaries and pensions more regularly, and whether the recovery of state-owned enterprises such as BIPC and Benue Links should be halted midway.
‎
‎“The future of Benue should never be decided by noise, bitterness or political theatrics. It should be determined by evidence, performance, competence and the collective interest of the people,” he said.
‎
‎Numbeve maintained that the administration’s programmes in industrialisation, institutional reforms, agriculture, infrastructure and revenue modernisation required continuity to achieve their full impact.
‎
‎“Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia merits a second term. The reforms currently underway require uninterrupted leadership for optimal results. Continuity under Governor Alia represents not merely stability; it represents accelerated development, deeper investor confidence, stronger institutions, expanded opportunities for young people, sustainable economic growth and Benue’s continued emergence as one of Nigeria’s leading states,” he said.

‎BENUE GOVT GIVES CONTRACTORS MARCHING ORDERS OVER DELAYED PHC RENOVATION

‎Benue govt gives contractors marching orders over delayed PHC renovation
‎
‎The Benue State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ogwuche, has expressed dissatisfaction over delays in the renovation of six Primary Health Care (PHC) centres across the state, directing contractors handling the projects to accelerate work while ensuring strict compliance with approved standards.
‎
‎The projects, funded by the Global Fund through UNICEF, are aimed at revitalising primary healthcare facilities and improving access to quality maternal and child healthcare services, particularly for women of child-bearing age, pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under the age of five.
‎
‎The Information Officer of the Benue State Primary Health Care Board, Grace Akure, in a statement, stated that Dr. Ogwuche issued the directive during an inspection tour of the projects in six Local Government Areas LGAs, of the state, where he assessed the level of work and observed that the contractors had exceeded the initial six-week completion timeline.
‎
‎“I am not satisfied with the pace of work. Contractors must speed up the projects and ensure that every aspect of the construction meets the required specifications and quality standards,” the commissioner said.
‎
‎He also pointed out defects in some of the ongoing works, directing that roofing and the positioning of certain units be adjusted to conform with approved designs before completion.
‎
‎The six health facilities covered were PHC Ameladu in Gboko LGA, PHC Aliade in Gwer East LGA, PHC Ayilamo in Logo LGA, PHC Asa in Otukpo LGA, PHC Orokam in Ogbadibo LGA and PHC Igede in Oju LGA.
‎
‎Officials accompanying the inspection disclosed that while PHC Asa in Otukpo was being rebuilt into a completely new facility, the remaining five centres were undergoing renovation and expansion to accommodate more patients and enhance service delivery.
‎
‎At PHC Ameladu in Gboko, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Benue State Primary Health Care Board, Samuel Mbatsoron, directed engineers to replace the roofing sheets and fix the ceiling in line with approved specifications, insisting that the project must meet expected standards before handover.
‎
‎Responding, the contractors apologised for failing to complete the projects within the agreed timeframe but assured the inspection team that all outstanding works would be completed and handed over to the Benue State Government on or before July 30, 2026.
‎
‎
‎The supervision team included the State Coordinator of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Laminu Nur; the Director of Disease Control and Immunisation, Dr. Austin Adanu; and UNICEF’s Vaccine Cold Logistics (VCL) Officer, Yusuf Mvumble.

GOV ALIA APPOINTMENTS NGBAJIME AS BENUE ASSEMBLY SERVICE COMMISSION MEMBER

‎Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, has approved the appointment of Dr. Anya Godwin Ngbajime, as a member of the Benue State House of Assembly Service Commission, subject to confirmation by the State House of Assembly.
‎
‎The appointment follows the vacancy created by the removal of the former member, Dorcas Faeren Mbatiav, and is in line with the Governor’s commitment to strengthening governance through the appointment of competent and experienced individuals to fill vacuums in key public institutions.
‎
‎Ngbajime, a core unionist, is also a seasoned administrator and accomplished public servant with an impressive record of service.
‎
‎He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Planning. He also has a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Educational Administration.
‎
‎He began his career with the Local Teaching Service Commission before joining the Benue State Civil Service, where he rose through the ranks to become Chairman of the Benue State Civil Service Commission, serving with distinction from 2007 to 2015.

‎According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, Gov Alia has forwarded Ngbajime’s name to the Benue State House of Assembly for confirmation in accordance with the provisions of the law.
‎
‎Ngbajime hails from Mbaivende, in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State.
