please hide my identity because if my husband sees this post, my marriage may not survive it ..

I’m 35years old and I have been married for seven years…

if you meet my husband today, you will probably call him the perfect man..

soft-spoken
Religious
Generous
Always smiling.

People admire him so much that sometimes I even question myself

But nobody knows what truly happens inside the marriage..

My husband is not physically abusive.

No

His own weapon is manipulation..

And honestly?
I think emotional manipulation can destroy someone slowly without leaving visible scars.

When we first got married,he was loving and active attentive..

He made me feel safe.

But after our first child was born , things started changing little by little..

Whenever he offends me and I complained, he would twist the situation until someone I became the guilty person.

If he shouted at me and I cried,he would say:

“So now I’m the bad guy because I reacted to your attitude “

If he ignores me for days he will blame me for pushing him away..

Even when he clearly lies,he speaks so calmly that’s I started doubting myself ..

One day I caught him chatting romantically with another woman.

I was shaking while confronting him.

Do you know what he said?

“ you invaded my privacy. That’s the real deal here..

And somehow…

We ended up arguing about my behavior instead of his cheating..

That’s was the first day I realized something was deeply wrong..

Over the years, he slowly isolated me from everyone..

If I visit my mother too often,he complains I love my family more than him..

If my friends invite me somewhere,he suddenly becomes cold and distant for days..

So gradually, I stopped talking to people.

I stopped going out..

I became emotionally dependent on him without realizing it.

Then the financial manipulation started

My husband earns very well, but he controls every single naira..

I have to explain every tiny expense like a child writing an exam..

Yet whenever he buys expensive thing for himself, he calls it “necessary “

Last year, I tried starting a small business online..

At first he supported me publicly

But privately

He discouraged me constantly

“ you’re too emotional for business “
“You don’t know how the world works “
“Focus on the children “
Eventually I lost motivation and stopped

Then something happened three months ago that opened my eyes completely.

I accidentally saw messages between him and his friends..

His friend asked him:

How do you keep your wife this obedient..

My husband replied and say

“ Simple.Never let a woman become too confident. Once she depends on you emotionally, financially and mentally.. she won’t leave no matter what you do..!

I felt sick reading it..

Everything suddenly made sense.

The guilt
The confusion
The self-doubt
The constant feeling that I was losing myself.

For seven years, this man has been carefully controlling my mind why pretending to be a loving husband.

Now I don’t recognize myself anymore.

I used to be confident.
I used to be happy.
I used to know my worth

Now I overthink every word before speaking.

And the scary part?

If you meet him outside, you will Never believe me.

Because manipulation rarely look like villain in public.

So please tell me honestly..

Can a manipulative partner truly change?

Or should someone run before losing themselves completely.

I just smiled, grabbed my son, and went for a walk.
I didn’t even ask my husband what they talked about. The next day, He told me. His sister had gotten a pretty big chunk of money from his parents to build her house.

His brother got a family property and money to renovate it.
US? We got a piece of land.
Everything else, my husband and I built ourselves. Loans, bills, construction…
All out of our own pockets.

And here’s the kicker:
My in-laws decided to keep living with us because, according to them, “we’re easygoing” and would take care of them when they got older. I heard that, smiled, and kept treating everyone normally.

I just stopped acting like taking care of everything was my job.

I started getting home from work at 6 PM. I didn’t rush to cook. I wasn’t available 24/7. Funny enough, a few days later, they started cooking for themselves.

Then my father-in-law had a stroke and ended up in the hospital.

My husband looked at me and said:

“Everyone’s busy.

Can’t you take a few days off to take care of my dad?” I just looked at him and said:
“But he’s not my dad. He made it pretty clear I’m not family.” Silence.

I think that was the first time my husband really understood the weight of those words. Because it’s REAL easy to say a daughter-in-law isn’t family when it’s time to make decisions, divide money, or hand out property. It gets a whole lot harder to remember that when you suddenly need her help.

No wahala The next day after my husband traveled, my motherinlaw called me.
She said, Come to the village. There’s something I want us to discuss.
I was like, Mama, is there a problem? What exactly do you want us to discuss?
She said, Just come. It’s not something we can discuss over the phone.
Now, where we live, the village is not far from us. It’s about an hour’s drive, so I got ready and went.
When I got there, the first thing I noticed was a big canopy outside the compound.
I was like, What is happening here? Is there a celebration going on that nobody told me about?”
But I didn't ask questions. I just went inside.
I greeted my motherinlaw, and because I didn't want to go there empty handed, I had bought her some things bread and a few other items.
I gave them to her, sat down and said,
Mama, what is happening? Why did you ask me to come? And where is my husband?
She said, “Don't worry. Very soon, he will join us.
Then she pointed outside.
You saw that canopy?
I said, Yes.
She said, That canopy is for your husband's uncle. They are on their way here. They want to come and es**rt me and your husband somewhere.
I asked, Es**rt you where?
That was when this woman dropped the bomb.
She said, My daughter, don't panic. It is one of those things African men do.
I said, Mama, what thing?
She said,
Your husband is going to get a second wife.
I just looked at her.
Then she added,
In fact, the girl is already pregnant.”
I was like.WHAT?
Then she quickly explained that she was only telling me because she didn't want any problem.
Apparently, she had asked my husband if I knew about the marriage, and he told her that I didn't.
So she decided to tell me herself.
I looked at her and said,
Mama, is that all?
She said, Yes.
I said, Okay. No wahala.
She looked at me.
I said, If my husband wants to marry a second wife, he has already made up his mind. He has already made his decision. Who am I to fight him? Who am I to stop an adult man from marrying another woman?
She just said, You are right.
So, long story short, everybody arrived.
My husband came with them, and I noticed that he couldn't even look me directly in the eyes.
Of course, he already knew that his mother had told me.
They eventually went ahead and married the woman.
When the new wife came into the house, my husband and his mother entered together and greeted everyone.
Then my mother-in-law said,
Before you bring out any refreshment, let me introduce someone to you.
She pointed at the woman.
This is my son's second wife
My husband went ahead and properly introduced her.
I looked at the woman and said,
You are welcome. Welcome to our family.
I introduced myself
My name is... I'm his first wife, and I have four boys.
Then I told her,
Your coming into this family brings blessings to us.”
I even said a little prayer for her
Then I left the room and went into the kitchen to continue what I was doing.
My husband and my mother-in-law were just looking at me like
😳😳😳
Then my mother-in-law followed me into the kitchen
She said,
What did you just say?
I said, Mama, what did I do?
She said,
I know you are pretending! I know deep down you are angry. You are only pretending because you don't want us to see that you are hungry
I said,
“Hungry as how?
She said,
You are supposed to be angry! You are supposed to throw tantrums! You are supposed to show us that you love my son!
I just looked at this woman
I said,
Mama, your son wanted to marry another woman. He didn't tell me. What exactly do you expect me to do? Should I k*ll him? He is an adult. He has made his decision
Then my husband came into the kitchen and joined the conversation
And this man actually said to his mother,
“Mama, can you see? She didn't even change!
He continued,
I told you this woman doesn't love me. How can I bring home a second wife and she is this calm? She didn't shout. She didn't fight. She even welcomed her!
I was just listening
Apparently, they were expecting me to fight
They expected me to shout
They expected me to insult the woman
Wait for part 3

Let me explain.

I have been married to this man for years, and together we have four boys. But let me tell you something—my marriage is not the typical “everything is rosy and perfect” kind of marriage.
My husband has always been the type to do whatever he wants. There was a point where he would disappear, come back whenever he wanted, and do things that would normally make a woman cry, fight, or lose her mind.
At first, I used to question him.
“Where are you going?”
“When are you coming back?”
“Who were you with?”
I used to cry. I used to complain. I used to report him to his mother.
But after a while, I became tired.
I just reached a point where I told myself, “You know what? Do whatever you want.”
I stopped asking questions.
I stopped crying.
I stopped throwing tantrums.
I stopped disturbing myself over things I could not control.
I simply focused on myself and my children.
If he told me, “I’m not coming home tonight,” I would just say, “Okay, no problem.”
If he said he was travelling, I would say, “Safe journey.”
I basically desensitized myself to his behavior.
And surprisingly, the moment I stopped chasing him and demanding explanations, this man started calling me names.
He would say things like, “You’re a virtual woman
And I would just look at him like… “Okay.” 😂
At some point, I even told him, “Please, do whatever you want to do. If you're going to be with other women, at least protect yourself.”
Yes, it got to that point.
I even started putting condoms in his car. 😭
That was how much I had detached myself from the situation.
I wasn't happy about it, but I had reached a point where I was simply trying to protect myself from the consequences of his choices.
I already have four children with this man. I have built my life around this marriage, and I honestly don't think leaving is something I can easily do.
So I decided to focus on myself and my children and let him live with the consequences of his decisions.
Now, concerning my mother-in-law…
Our relationship has always been complicated.
We don't exactly fight, but I can't say we're best friends either. It's more like… sometimes I like her, sometimes I don't. 😂
One thing that really created resentment in me was how she used to respond whenever my husband and I had issues.
Back then, whenever I caught him cheating, I would report him to his mother.
And what would she tell me?
you know he's a man.”
That statement used to annoy me so much.
Because I'm also a human being. I have feelings too.
But I never allowed the resentment to turn into an open fight. We still spoke occasionally and maintained our distance.
Then something happened recently.
My husband told me he was travelling to the village for his friend's father's burial.
I didn't question him.
I simply said, “No wahala. Safe journey.”
The next day, after he had travelled, my mother-in-law called me.
She said, “Come to the village. There is something I want us to discuss.”
Immediately, I became suspicious.
I asked her, “Mama, I hope there is no problem? Discuss what? What is going on?”
She didn't tell me much over the phone.
She just said, “Come first. We need to talk.”
At that point, I started wondering what could possibly be so serious that she couldn't tell me over the phone.
And honestly, I had no idea that the conversation I was about to have with this woman would change everything…
To be continued. 👀
