Daniel had one best friend in the whole world.
His name was Kola.
The two boys met on their very first day of kindergarten and had been inseparable ever since. Every afternoon, Daniel came home with a new Kola story.
"Mummy, Kola said..."
"Mummy, Kola did..."
"Mummy, Kola and I..."
Sonia felt like she knew the little boy without ever having a real conversation with him.
At school drop-offs and pick-ups, she'd exchange polite smiles and greetings with Kola's mum. Nothing more.
When school resumed for Primary One, Daniel could barely contain his excitement.
The moment the car stopped, he jumped out and ran through the school gate.
"I can't wait to see Kola!" he shouted.
That afternoon, however, Sonia barely recognized the little boy walking toward her.
His shoulders were slumped.
His head hung low.
He dragged his feet to the car.
"What happened?" she asked.
Daniel burst into tears.
"Kola wasn't in school... and my teacher wouldn't tell me why."
The same thing happened the next day.
And the day after that.
A whole week passed, and Daniel couldn't stop asking where his best friend had gone.
Sonia even approached the school, hoping they could at least reassure her son.
"I'm sorry," they said. "We can't disclose information about another family."
Days later, as Sonia was leaving a shopping mall, she spotted Kola's mum walking in.
She immediately turned around and hurried after her.
After a brief conversation, the truth came out.
Kola's father had lost his job months earlier.
They couldn't afford the school fees, so they had withdrawn him and decided to homeschool him until things improved.
Sonia went home with a heavy heart.
The following day, she visited the school.
Quietly.
Without telling anyone.
She paid Kola's school fees—not just for the term, but for the next two years.
And she requested that her name never be mentioned.
The next morning, Daniel stepped out of the car.
Then he froze.
"Kola!"
The two boys sprinted toward each other, laughing, shouting, and hugging as if they'd been apart for years instead of weeks.
Sonia smiled from a distance.
Just then, Kola's mum walked over, tears filling her eyes.
"They told me the payment was anonymous," she said softly. "But I knew it was you."
Sonia tried to deny it.
She shook her head.
"You were the only person I told," Kola's mum continued. "My husband is too proud to tell anyone about our situation."
She took Sonia's hands in hers.
"May God reward you for giving my son his childhood back... and for restoring hope to our family."
Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give isn't money.
It's preserving someone else's dignity while changing their life. ❤️
