Nnamdi Kanu
Here’s the latest update (as of today, 7 Nov 2025) on Nnamdi Kanu’s court case:
✅ What happened today
The Federal High Court in Abuja stood down proceedings in the trial of Kanu to allow him to file documents and depose to an affidavit that he says he had been prevented from submitting by the State Security Service (SSS).
Kanu complained that for the past 3 days he had not been allowed to file his defence process by SSS officers.
The judge ordered court registry staff and the notary/stamp official to come to SSS office so Kanu could duly file.
After Kanu’s failure to open his defence within the period allotted, the judge fixed 20 November 2025 for delivery of judgment in his trial on seven terrorism-related counts.
The defence was declared foreclosed (i.e., Kanu lost the right to open defence due to non-compliance).
📝 Why it matters
Kanu leads the proscribed group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and is charged with terrorism offences tied to secessionist agitation.
The court perceives continued delay in opening defence as a waiver of his right under Section 36 (constitutional right to defence).
Fixing a judgment date signals a major turning point in what has been a lengthy trial with many adjournments.
⚠️ What remains uncertain / next steps
Though the defence was foreclosed, Kanu still attempted to file documents today. The court allowed a “stand-down” to accommodate this.
The ruling on 20 November could present serious consequences. It is not yet clear exactly what judgment will be delivered (guilty/innocent/other disposition).
The interplay of Kanu’s claims — that the law under which he is charged was repealed — remains part of his defence strategy.
