FORMULATION DIARY 002 | An improvement isn’t always the final formula 🧪
Prototype 1B was an important improvement — but it wasn’t the final formula.
Compared with my first prototype, it gave me better viscosity, cream structure and body while maintaining good spreadability.
One of the key changes was increasing Olivem 1000 to 4.00%, which produced a noticeably thicker and more structured cream.
But when I compared Prototype 1B with the commercial reference, there was still room to refine.
The reference felt richer and more emollient, while Prototype 1B absorbed more quickly and produced a lighter after-feel.
That observation gave me my next formulation question:
Could I increase richness and cream body without making the formulation overly heavy or compromising its spreadability?
Instead of increasing the emulsifier again, I decided to explore the overall lipid phase.
And that decision led to Prototype 3 — the formulation I ultimately selected as my final prototype.
This is one of my favourite lessons from the development process:
A prototype doesn’t have to be the final formula to be successful. Sometimes its most important job is showing you what to change next.
Formulate. Observe. Refine.

FORMULATION DIARY 001 | From Prototype to Final Formula 🧪
A formula isn’t finished simply because it emulsifies.
Formulation development is a process of observing, evaluating and refining.
During this reverse-formulation project, I developed several prototypes while working towards a richer, more structured cream with good spreadability and cosmetic elegance.
Prototype 1B gave me improved viscosity and cream structure, but I wanted to explore whether I could increase the richness and body of the formulation without compromising its application.
That question led to Prototype 3.
Rather than increasing the emulsifier again, I reduced the water phase and redistributed that percentage across selected lipid components. The result was a thicker, richer and more cohesive cream that still spread smoothly across the skin.
But making the cream was only part of the process.
Then came the important part:
Observe it again.
Because what a formulation looks and feels like immediately after manufacture isn’t the whole story.
Over the next few posts, I’ll share more of this development process — including the formulation decisions, pH observations, texture changes, Day 4 assessment and why Prototype 3 ultimately became my final selected prototype.
