Limampu’t apat na taon na ang nakalipas nang ipailalim ni Ferdinand Marcos Sr. ang buong Pilipinas sa Batas Militar sa bisa ng Proclamation No. 1081. Ginawang katwiran ito upang tugunan ang diumano’y lumalalang kaguluhan, rebelyon, at banta sa seguridad ng bansa. Sa ilalim ng diktadura, ang kapangyarihan ng estado ay hindi lamang ginamit upang supilin ang armadong paglaban, bagkus ay ginamit din upang patahimikin ang mga kritiko, kontrolin ang pamamahayag, ikulong ang mga kalaban sa pulitika, at durugin ang mga kumukuwestiyon sa umiiral na kapangyarihan.

Higit 70,000 ang nakulong. Halos 34,000 ang pinahirapan. Mahigit 3,200 ang pinatay. Sa kabila ng mga numerong ito, hindi pa rin sapat ang mga bilang upang mailarawan ang bigat ng diktadura. Sapagkat sa likod ng bawat numero ay isang taong may pangalan, isang pamilyang naiwan, isang pangarap na pinutol, at isang buhay na ipinagkait.

Ang panahon ng Batas Militar ay hindi isang malabong alaala na maaari na lamang kalimutan dahil matagal na itong lumipas. Sa likod ng mga numerong ito ay mga pangalang hanggang ngayon ay hinahanap, mga litratong patuloy na iniingatan, at mga pamilyang patuloy na naghihintay ng sagot. Sila ang mga buhay na hindi dapat mabura sa kasaysayan. Hindi natatapos ang paghahanap ng hustisya dahil lamang lumipas na ang Martial Law.

Ang panahong ito ay hindi lamang kasaysayan ng isang presidente. Ito ay kasaysayan ng kung ano ang kayang gawin ng kapangyarihang walang sapat na pananagutan. Kasaysayan ito ng mga institusyong maaaring gamitin laban sa mismong mamamayang dapat nitong pinoprotektahan. Kasaysayan ito ng kung ano ang nangyayari kapag ang kritisismo ay tinatrato bilang banta, ang pagtutol bilang pagtataksil, at ang katahimikan bilang sukatan ng kaayusan.

Kaya sa ika-54 na taon, hindi lamang namin inaalala ang mga pinatay, dinukot, ikinulong, at pinahirapan. Ipinagpapatuloy namin ang kanilang paggunita para sa katotohanan at hustisya. Ang pag-aalaala na walang paninindigan ay madaling maging seremonya. Ang paggunita na walang pananagutan ay madaling maging dekorasyon. At ang kasaysayang hindi ipinagtatanggol ay maaaring muling baluktutin ng mga may kapangyarihang makinabang sa paglimot.

Ngayong 54 taon na ang nakalipas mula Martial Law, may mga pamilyang naghihintay pa rin ng sagot, may mga biktimang naghihintay pa rin ng ganap na hustisya, at may sambayanang patuloy na nakikipagbuno sa katotohanan.

Kaisa ang Kapatirang Pitong Lawa sa UP Los Baños, patuloy ang paghahangad ng hustisya at pananagutan.
