SAFETY CULTURE

What is Safety Culture?

Safety Culture is the set of attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviors that determine how people think about and practice safety in the workplace.
✓A strong safety culture helps prevent accidents, injuries, and property damage.

1. Positive Safety Culture ✅
A positive safety culture exists when everyone in the organization actively supports and follows safety rules

Characteristics:
✓Management prioritizes safety.
✓Employees follow safety procedures.
✓Hazards are reported immediately.
✓Proper PPE is always used.
✓Safety training is conducted regularly.

Example:
A welding worker wears a welding helmet, gloves, safety shoes, and protective clothing before starting work. The supervisor checks the work area and ensures all safety measures are in place.
Result:
✔ Fewer accidents
✔ Better productivity
✔ Healthy work environment

2. Negative Safety Culture ❌
A negative safety culture exists when safety rules are ignored or considered unimportant.

Characteristics:
✓Workers ignore safety procedures.
✓PPE is not used properly.
✓Hazards are not reported.
✓Lack of safety training.
✓Production is prioritized over safety.

Example:
A worker performs grinding without safety goggles. A metal particle enters the worker's eye,
causing an injury.

Result:
✘ More accidents and injuries
✘ Property damage
✘ Reduced productivity
✘ Increased costs

Conclusion
Safety is everyone's responsibility. A positive safety culture reduces workplace accidents and creates a safer, healthier, and more productive environment for all employees.

Excavation?
Excavation is the process of removing earth, soil, rock, or other materials from the ground to create a hole, trench, tunnel, or foundation for construction work.

Simple Definition
The digging of land through man and machinery is called excavation.

It is one of the most common activities in construction, mining, road building, and utility installation.

Examples of Excavation

_Building Foundations
_Digging the ground before constructing a house or building.
_Trench Excavation
_Digging long, narrow trenches for water pipes, gas lines, or electrical cables.
_Road Construction
_Removing soil and rocks to prepare the road base.
Mining
_Excavating earth to extract minerals, coal, or other resources.

Precautions
__Use proper shoring or trench support systems.
__Keep heavy equipment away from trench edges.
__Provide safe access and egress (ladders).
__Wear PPE (helmet, safety boots, gloves, high-visibility vest).
__Inspect Equipments before strat works
__Givig TBT and follow instructions
__Dont take Shortcuts
__Stay and up-to-date with company policies

Note__
Keep excavator at least 0.5 to 1 meter (50 cm – 1 m) away from the edge of the trench or excavation.( it's depends on soil types)

Shoring?

Shoring is a construction technique used to temporarily support a building, structure, trench, or excavation that’s unstable or at risk of collapsing.

3 main types:

1.Trench shoring
Used in construction/excavation to prevent trench walls from caving in. You’ll see metal plates, hydraulic braces, or timber used to hold the soil back. This is a major safety requirement in construction.

2. Building shoring
Used when a building’s foundation or walls are weakened during renovation, demolition, or after damage from fire/earthquake. Steel props, timber posts, or hydraulic jacks hold the load until permanent repairs are made.

3. Ship shoring
In shipbuilding/repair, it means propping up a ship in dry dock so it doesn’t move or collapse.

Why it matters:
Without shoring, trenches and damaged structures can collapse quickly. It’s a key safety measure covered by OSHA and other safety standards.

Health and safety policy?

A health and safety policy is a formal document used by an organization to show its commitment to protecting the health, safety, and wellbeing of employees, visitors, and anyone affected by its activities.

In simple terms:

It explains how a workplace keeps people safe and prevents accidents or harm.

Key parts of a health and safety policy:
Statement of intent
The organization’s commitment to health and safety
Usually signed by a senior manager

Responsibilities
Who is responsible for safety (employers, managers, employees)
What each person must do
Arrangements
Practical steps taken to ensure safety, such as:
Risk assessments
Training and supervision
Emergency procedures
Safe use of equipment
Reporting accidents

Why it’s important:
Prevents injuries and illness
Ensures legal compliance
Creates a safer working environment
Improves productivity and morale

Example (short):
A company might state that it will provide safe equipment, train staff properly, and regularly check for hazards to reduce risks.

Risk Assessment VS Risk Profiling?

Risk Assessment

Risk assessment is the process of:
Identifying hazards
Evaluating the level of risk
Deciding control measures
Reducing or eliminating danger

Simple Formula:
Risk = Likelihood × Severity

Example:
In construction work:
Hazard: Falling from height

Risk: Serious injury or death

Control: Safety harness, guardrails, training
Main Purpose:

To prevent accidents and injuries during work activities.

2. What is Risk Profiling?

Risk Profiling
Risk profiling means analyzing and categorizing risks to understand:

Which risks are most common
Which areas are most dangerous
Which workers or departments face higher risks
It gives management a “risk picture” of the organization.

Example:
A company studies:
Fire incidents
Electrical hazards
Chemical exposure
Vehicle accidents
Then it ranks departments from high risk to low risk.

Main Purpose:
To support planning, budgeting, and safety strategy.
