Spain’s parliament just became the stage for one of Europe’s strongest condemnations of Israel’s war in Gaza.

On May 20, 2025, Spanish MP Ione Belarra, leader of Podemos, delivered a fiery speech during a debate over arms sales to Israel. Her message was direct: Spain must impose a full arms embargo because Palestinians “cannot wait any longer.”

Belarra accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of leading a campaign of destruction in Gaza and used some of the harshest language heard in a European parliament, calling him “the Hi**er of our time.” She argued that the world’s failure to stop his government would leave a moral stain on everyone watching.

Her speech focused heavily on the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. She said Palestinians are being bombed, starved, denied medical care, and pushed through what she described as the biggest ethnic cleansing of the 21st century.

Belarra called for Spain to block all military-related exports to Israel, including weapons, protective equipment, fuel, and any material that could be used for military purposes. She also pushed for changes to Spain’s foreign trade laws so that future military agreements would be banned with any state accused of genocide or crimes against humanity.

The motion, backed by Sumar, Podemos, and the Republican Left of Catalonia, narrowly passed by 176 votes to 171. During the same session, Spain’s Defence Minister Margarita Robles said Spain had not purchased a single weapon from Israel since October 7, 2023.

The vote was non-binding, but politically powerful.

It reflects a growing shift inside Spain and parts of Europe, where more leaders are demanding stronger action over Gaza, stricter limits on arms trade, and greater accountability for governments accused of violating international law.

For Belarra and her supporters, the message was simple:

Condemnation is not enough.

If Europe says it stands for human rights, then its weapons, trade, and diplomacy must reflect that.
