Breaking news: Guinea has become the first ECOWAS member state to officially reject the planned Eco single currency, opting instead to retain the Guinean franc.

Its government says keeping its national currency is essential to protecting Guinea’s economic sovereignty and maintaining control over monetary policy. Officials also argue that with 80% of the country’s exports going to Asia, joining the regional currency union in 2027 offers limited economic benefit at this stage.

KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 was headed from Surabaya to Makassar when flames broke out.
