At least 17 people were killed and nine others injured after a humanitarian convoy belonging to the John Dau Foundation was ambushed on Monday along the route between Payuel Payam and Pajut in Panyang Payam, Duk County, Jonglei State.

The convoy, which was returning from a joint training organized by the World Food Programme (WFP) and Action Against Hunger, came under attack at around 2 p.m.

Duk County Commissioner John Chatim blamed suspected armed criminals from the neighboring Greater Pibor Administrative Area for the attack, saying security forces have been deployed to pursue the assailants.

The John Dau Foundation confirmed that five of its staff members were among those killed, while two staff members and a driver were seriously injured. The organization described the attack as the worst tragedy in its history and reaffirmed its commitment to continuing humanitarian work despite the incident.

The Greater Pibor Administrative Area's Information Minister, Jacob Werchum Juok, said he was unaware of the incident and urged Jonglei officials to verify the claims before assigning blame.
