Nutrition plays a big role in supporting people living with HIV because the immune system needs extra strength to fight infections and side effects of treatment. Here are some foods that are generally good for HIV patients:
âś… Immune-Supporting Foods
Fruits & Vegetables: Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (e.g., oranges, berries, papaya, spinach, kale, carrots, broccoli).
Whole Grains: Brown rice, oats, quinoa, whole wheat bread—provide steady energy and fiber.
Lean Protein: Fish, chicken, turkey, eggs, beans, lentils, tofu—important for maintaining muscle and repairing tissue.
Healthy Fats: Avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil, flaxseed—support brain health and reduce inflammation.
Probiotics: Yogurt with live cultures, kefir, fermented foods like sauerkraut—help with gut health (important if taking meds).
âś… Micronutrients That Matter
Iron (lean meats, beans, spinach) – prevents anemia.
Zinc (pumpkin seeds, nuts, shellfish) – helps immune system.
Vitamin C (citrus, bell peppers, kiwi) – boosts immunity.
Vitamin D & Calcium (milk, fortified plant milks, salmon, eggs) – supports bone health (HIV meds can weaken bones).
B vitamins (whole grains, leafy greens, eggs) – for energy and nervous system support.
âś… Hydration & Digestive Health
Plenty of water—important if on medication.
Herbal teas like ginger or chamomile—soothing for digestion.
⚠️Foods to Limit
Excess sugar & processed foods – weaken immunity.
Greasy/fried foods – strain digestion and liver.
Alcohol – can interfere with medications.
Raw or undercooked meats/seafood – higher infection risk due to weakened immunity.
👉 A balanced plate = ½ veggies + ¼ lean protein + ¼ whole grain + healthy fat.

How can the stigma index be included in GC8 plans?
This new brief explores how stigma index data can be integrated into funding requests, positioned within program priorities, and used to support implementation throughout the grant cycle. It highlights practical ways to connect community-led evidence with decision-making, from planning to monitoring progress.
A useful resource for those looking to strengthen proposals, secure funding, and ensure that programs reflect the realities people living with HIV experience.
