Natural hair has conveniently been one of the most controversial subjects in today’s society. It affects everyone in ways we seldom pay close attention to. From commercials advertising products opposite of hair to how children are treated inside of their classrooms, or better yet the underlying decision of whether it is professional enough for the job. A12-year-old African-American honor student attending Faith Christian Academy in Orlando, Fl who faced the possibility of expulsion because her natural hair posed a distraction? They suggested she “tamed” her mane, or face being expelled within a week. For this very reason, I took a stand. No longer would I conform to a society that deemed my natural textured hair as “nappy” or “unkempt.”

I am Shanice Brewster, 23-year old natural hair and beauty vlogger. I began my natural hair journey and blog in 2012. Through my blog, I sought to educate my followers through my journey and experiences with transitioning, big chopping and fully embracing my natural hair. I did photo documentation of my hair growth, different styles and products that I used. But my vision kept growing. My blog was good, but I wanted better. In March 2016, I launched my self-titled Youtube Vlog, ShaniceAlisha. A complete spin off from my personal blog, where I video document tutorials and tips on how I achieve various styles and looks, ranging from hair to makeup. In such a shallow and artificial world, my platform stands to challenge women on embracing their natural beauty including their hair regimens, beauty routines and overall lifestyle. My goal is to promote the less ideal image, or I’ll say texture, of natural hair and show women that face this challenge how to overcome and accept the very thing that makes them one of a kind. I encourage my viewers, followers and subscribers to test my techniques and share their results and feedback. Ultimately, through raw and relatable videos, I hope to help someone see their natural beauty and embrace everything about it.
