Heredity and Genetics
Heredity is the process by which traits and characteristics are passed from parents to offspring. This includes physical traits such as eye color, height, skin color, as well as health risk factors.
Genetics is the scientific study of genes and how they influence biological processes. It encompasses how traits are inherited and how genetic variations contribute to differences among people.
Together, heredity and genetics form the biological foundation of an individual and influence many aspects of aging, from cellular changes to disease susceptibility.
As people age, genetic factors play a crucial role in determining the speed and manner in which bodily conditions deteriorate. Heredity establishes the baseline for how our bodies respond over time to environmental and lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and stress.
HOW GENETICS INFLUENCES AGING
1. Lifespan Potential
One of the most direct ways genetics influences aging is through inherited lifespan potential. Studies of long-lived families indicate that about 20–30% of a person’s lifespan is determined by genetic factors. People from families with long-lived ancestors statistically tend to live longer.
Research has identified specific genes linked to longevity, such as:
• FOXO3 — associated with increased lifespan and reduced risk of age-related diseases.
• SIRT6 — involved in DNA repair and metabolism regulation.
• APOE — variants of this gene (e.g., APOE4) are linked to increased Alzheimer's disease risk, while other variants may contribute to longevity.
Individuals with favorable gene variants often demonstrate slower aging processes and increased resistance to age-related diseases.
2. Telomere Length and Cellular Aging
Telomeres are protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that shorten with each cell division. When telomeres become critically short, cells enter a state of senescence (irreversible growth arrest) or undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death). This process contributes to aging and age-related diseases.
Genes such as TERT and TERC regulate telomerase, an enzyme maintaining telomere length. Mutations in these genes can accelerate cellular aging.
Some individuals inherit longer telomeres, potentially slowing the aging process.
3. DNA Repair Mechanisms
DNA damage accumulates with age due to environmental factors (UV radiation, toxins) and internal metabolic processes. Genetic variations in DNA repair genes (such as BRCA1/2, PARP, and XPA) influence how efficiently the body corrects these errors.
Individuals with highly efficient DNA repair systems generally age more slowly.
Defects in repair genes can lead to premature aging disorders (e.g., Werner syndrome, Hutchinson-Gilford progeria).
AGE-RELATED DISEASES
Genetic predisposition significantly influences the development of age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. For instance, specific variants of the APOE gene are associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer's disease, affecting both onset and progression.
GENE-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS
While genes provide baseline characteristics, environmental and lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, toxin exposure, and stress interact with genetic predispositions to influence aging. This interaction explains why two people with similar genetic backgrounds may age differently depending on their life choices and environment. For example, calorie restriction has been shown to affect longevity genes such as SIRT1.
Although we cannot change our genetic code, understanding heredity enables personalized interventions, including targeted therapies, lifestyle adjustments, and early medical screenings, promoting healthier aging.

Arthritis is one of the most common conditions affecting people today. For many, life with arthritis means relying on anti-inflammatory medications just to get through the day. But painkillers don’t address the root cause - so the pain returns again and again. Contrary to popular belief, arthritis is not a single disease. It’s an umbrella term for more than 100 different conditions that can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility in the joints. It can affect just one joint or many, and it doesn’t only happen to older adults - young people and even children can develop arthritis.
The condition may appear suddenly or develop gradually, depending on the type. For some, it remains mild; for others, it progresses, severely limiting mobility and quality of life.
To better understand, let’s look at the main types of arthritis.
DEGENERATIVE (WEAR-AND-TEAR) ARTHRITIS
• Osteoarthritis - breakdown of joint cartilage due to age or injury.
• Post-traumatic arthritis - develops after joint damage.
INFLAMMATORY AUTOIMMUNE ARTHRITIS
• Rheumatoid arthritis - the immune system attacks the lining of the joints.
• Psoriatic arthritis - occurs in people with psoriasis.
• Ankylosing spondylitis - affects the spine and sacroiliac joints.
• Reactive arthritis - triggered by infections, often urinary or intestinal.
METABOLIC ARTHRITIS
• Gout - caused by uric acid crystal buildup in the joints.
• Pseudogout (chondrocalcinosis) - caused by calcium pyrophosphate crystals.
INFECTIOUS ARTHRITIS
• Septic arthritis - a bacterial infection inside the joint (often Staphylococcus aureus).
• Viral arthritis - linked to infections such as hepatitis, parvovirus, or some tropical viruses.
RARE AND SPECIFIC FORMS
• Juvenile idiopathic arthritis - occurs in children and adolescents.
• Systemic lupus erythematosus - can cause joint inflammation.
• Scleroderma - may present with arthritis-like symptoms.
• Behçet’s disease.
• Sarcoidosis with joint involvement.
Arthritis can appear in many forms, which is why proper diagnosis is essential. If you experience persistent pain or swelling in your joints, it’s important to see a doctor. The first step in any healing journey is identifying the type of arthritis you’re dealing with - because treatment depends on it.
For example, in cases of infectious arthritis, early medical intervention is absolutely necessary. Modern medicine offers many tools to reduce symptoms and slow progression, but lasting recovery often requires something more: a comprehensive, holistic strategy tailored to your life and your body.
In the next sections, we’ll take a closer look at the most common forms of arthritis and explore how they can be approached - not only managed, but truly healed.
