In leadership we teach: Don't send your ducks to eagle school.

This is one of my favorite leadership lessons because it's both humorous and profound.

Here's what I mean: ducks are wonderful creatures. They swim beautifully, they're great in groups, they're adaptable. But they'll never soar like eagles. It's not in their nature.

Eagles, on the other hand, are magnificent solo fliers. They soar to great heights, they have incredible vision, they're independent hunters. But try to get an eagle to swim with a flock? It's not happening.

For years, I watched leaders make the same mistake: they'd hire someone, identify what that person couldn't do well, and then spend all their energy trying to "fix" those weaknesses.

They'd take their best detail-oriented, process-focused team member (a duck) and try to train them to be a visionary, big-picture leader (an eagle). Or they'd take their creative, independent contributor (an eagle) and try to force them into a role that required constant teamwork and collaborative ex*****on (a duck role).

The result? Frustration on both sides. The employee feels inadequate because they're being asked to operate against their natural wiring. The leader feels disappointed because the person "isn't growing" in the desired direction.

My mentor taught me: "Jim, stop trying to change people's fundamental nature. Instead, put ducks in duck roles and eagles in eagle roles. Then watch them thrive."

This doesn't mean people can't grow or develop new skills. It means working WITH someone's natural strengths rather than against them.

Some people are built for detailed ex*****on—give them systems to manage. Some are built for creative innovation—give them problems to solve. Some thrive in teams—put them in collaborative roles. Some excel independently—give them autonomy.

The art of leadership is recognizing who people are, accepting their natural design, and positioning them where they can contribute their best.

Are you trying to send your ducks to eagle school? Or are you creating an environment where both ducks and eagles can thrive in their own way?

Absolutely YES!

You were never meant to blend in. The anointing on your life will always set you apart, not to isolate you, but to position you for something deeper and more meaningful than what comfort can offer. There are paths others can take that won’t fit where God is leading you. There are words others can speak that won’t align with what He is forming in you.

Being different is not a flaw, it’s evidence of calling. And what feels like distance from the crowd is often God’s way of shaping impact in you.

Stay faithful to the path, even when it feels unfamiliar. You’re not lost.. you’re being led. 🙏🏻🤍
