A Texas dream, a $5,000 investment, and a whole lot of pink helped build one of the most recognizable beauty companies in the world.

Mary Kay Cosmetics was founded in Dallas on September 13, 1963, by Mary Kay Ash. After spending years in direct sales and watching men she had trained get promoted ahead of her, Ash left the corporate world and decided to build a company of her own.

At 45, she took her experience and turned it into a business plan designed to give women something many workplaces weren’t offering them at the time: a real opportunity to build their own success.

With her son Richard Rogers, Ash launched the company from a small Dallas storefront with just nine Independent Beauty Consultants and a $5,000 investment.

It didn’t stay small for long.

Sales reached nearly $200,000 in the company’s first full year, and Mary Kay became known for much more than cosmetics. The company built a culture around recognition, entrepreneurship and rewarding its top performers.

And then came the pink Cadillac.

Mary Kay Ash began driving a custom pink Cadillac in 1968, and the following year the company started awarding pink Cadillacs to top-performing consultants. The cars quickly became rolling advertisements and one of the most recognizable symbols in American direct sales.

Over the following decades, the little Dallas cosmetics company expanded around the world, while Mary Kay Ash became one of Texas’ best-known female entrepreneurs.

Her influence also extended beyond business. The Mary Kay Ash Foundation, established in 1996, has supported cancer research and programs addressing domestic violence.

Mary Kay Ash died in 2001, but the company she started in a tiny Dallas storefront is still headquartered in the Dallas area more than six decades later.

Not bad for a Texas business that started with $5,000, nine consultants and an idea.

And, of course, a whole lot of pink. 💗
