In the flooded depths of the San Andrés cenote near the ancient city of Chichén Itzá, underwater archaeologists have discovered a stunning portal to the ancient Maya underworld. Submerged 15 feet beneath the water's surface inside a deep cave network, a joint expedition by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and French researchers recovered a completely intact, 1,000-year-old wooden Maya canoe—the first complete vessel of its kind ever found in the Maya area.

Far from a standard transport boat, the 5-foot-long vessel features an incredibly heavy prow and stern.

This structural imbalance made it practically unseaworthy for navigating swift open currents, leading marine archaeologists to conclude it was crafted specifically as a ritual offering for a symbolic journey into the afterlife.

The sacred nature of the site is reinforced by a massive cache of 38 skeletal remains found surrounding the watercraft.

Alongside the foot bone of a human female, the cave floor was packed with bones from turkeys, dogs, eagles, and notably, armadillos.

In Maya cosmology, deep caves and water-filled cenotes were viewed as Xibalba—the terrifying entrance to the underworld.

Because armadillos are skilled swimmers capable of holding their breath to walk along riverbeds, scientists believe the Maya sacrificed them as spiritual "avatars" or vehicles for God L, a jaguar deity of wealth and the underworld often depicted with an armadillo-shell cape.

This untouched time capsule, perfectly sealed by the anaerobic conditions of the deep water, preserves fragments of 40 intentionally broken pottery vessels and a ceremonial knife, rewriting our understanding of early Mesoamerican spiritual practices.
