In December I won an instagram contest with a portrait studio and my prize was an oil portrait session for me and Hoagie. We sat and posed for a photo shoot together, I chose my favorite shot, and 6 months later a “museum-quality” oil painting arrived at my doorstep. We are ART baby, welcome to Gemini season!

the last five days. we moved in, unpacked a lot, Joey turned 30 and I made him an ugly cake, I grilled and burned hot dogs for my friends, and Hoagie had his first trip to the dog beach. And we had our entryway retiled (the most grown up thing I’ve ever said) and I am in love with this tile (sorry) ☀️🥵🏡

Today marks one year without Sam. This day, like her birthday, is now felt in my dusty old bones. I feel comforted by the fact that, during this time last year, I got the chance to say everything you’d want to say to a best friend who is extremely sick: I love you, I miss you, I can’t wait until we can see each other again. Something beautiful about Sam was that she remained hilarious and hopeful even in the face of relentless illness. That also comforts me, that she was finding ways to dream about the future, even while she was very sick.

I try to make small spaces for her. I bring her with me when I go somewhere cool or do something fun, or when someone does something insane at a comedy show. I tell her about it silently and hope that she hears me. I sit under the CAMP sign and can’t believe the things we did together, for the sake of comedy and friendship. The hats, the burps, the PBRs, the wave, the cackling, the parties, the hugs, the community, the funnest friendship I’ve ever had.

I miss you so much bb girl and I hope you knew that I always wanted to be more like you. You were truly fearless in so many ways which I am not. Your life was too short, but you packed it to the brim (and spilling over) with energy, love, so many laughs, art, music, cats, I could go on and on. But I’ll stop because you hated sappy posts. Love you forever Sam ❤️‍🩹
