The scapula is an important part of your horseโ€™s movement, helping the front legs move freely and comfortably. Tension in the neck and shoulder muscles can make it harder for the shoulder blade to glide smoothly, which may affect stride length and overall mobility. Equine massage can help ease muscle tension in these areas, encouraging relaxation and helping your horse move more comfortably. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’™

For horses that tend to get tight or sore through their backs โ€” including horses dealing with kissing spine โ€” injections can be a useful part of the treatment plan.

In some cases, medication is used to help quiet painful or reactive areas and allow the horse to move more comfortably, depending on the issue. Muscle relaxers can be a helpful addition to the horse in some situations.

But what you do between injections can be just as important.

The goal isnโ€™t simply to keep treating a sore back. Itโ€™s to create a program that helps the horse develop the strength, mobility and topline needed to better support that back.

๐™๐™ƒ๐™€๐™๐˜ผ๐™‹๐™” & ๐˜ฝ๐™Š๐˜ฟ๐™” ๐™’๐™Š๐™๐™†
Depending on the individual horse, therapies such as VSIS, Equiscope, Shockwave and routine body work can be incorporated to help manage muscle tension, soreness and areas of compensation. These therapies donโ€™t replace proper diagnosis or strengthening โ€” they can be tools used alongside the overall program.

๐˜พ๐™Š๐™‰๐˜ฟ๐™„๐™๐™„๐™Š๐™‰๐™„๐™‰๐™‚
A strong back needs a strong supporting system. Exercises that appropriately engage the core, hindquarters and topline can help the horse learn to carry itself correctly rather than constantly bracing or compensating.

Hill work, poles, transitions, backing, controlled collection and properly performed groundwork can all have a place depending on the horse.

๐™‰๐™๐™๐™๐™„๐™๐™„๐™Š๐™‰
You canโ€™t build muscle without giving the body what it needs to build it. Adequate quality protein, essential amino acids, calories, vitamins and minerals are important when trying to develop and maintain topline. If a horse is struggling to build muscle despite appropriate work, the entire diet is worth evaluating.

๐™Ž๐˜ผ๐˜ฟ๐˜ฟ๐™‡๐™€ ๐™๐™„๐™
And you cannot out-treat a saddle that doesnโ€™t fit.

Poor saddle fit can create pressure points, muscle guarding and soreness and may continually aggravate a back youโ€™re spending time and money trying to improve. Saddle fit should be evaluated regularly, especially as a horseโ€™s conditioning and topline change.

๐™๐™๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ ๐™š๐™–๐™ฌ๐™–๐™ฎ?

Veterinary care + appropriate therapy + correct conditioning + nutrition + saddle fit all work together.

For tighter-backed horses, especially those with kissing spine, the best program usually isnโ€™t ONE treatment โ€” itโ€™s consistent management from every angle.

Itโ€™s been awhile! Welcome back to โ€œMuscle Mondayโ€! Understanding how different muscles effect your horses performance is such a crucial part of owning horses. I am here to help you as the owner, help your horses succeed!

The medial gluteal is one of the horseโ€™s major muscles for hip extension and powerful movement of the hindquarters. It helps propel the horse forward, especially during activities like barrel racing, jumping, and collected work. When this muscle becomes tight or fatigued, it can affect hind-end power, stride length, and overall movement. Regular assessment and appropriate bodywork can help support healthy muscle function and mobility.
